Hello all, I am currently using a 50D and have the opportunity to purchase a 5D Classic. Could anyone please tell me how they compare, whether the 5D Classic is still "worth it", as it were and what I may miss from the 50D? I take a lot of low light boxing shots with high shutter speed at typically high iso. As for lenses, I have a 50mm 1.8 lens and the 24mm 2.8 pancake so I believe both would work with the FF body. Thanks very much!

Thank you for this, I didn't even think to look at the 5D classic thread - so stuck on the idea of comparing the two! The low-light AF may be a concern but the reality is I am broadening my horizons when it comes to my photography and I'm really just trying to talk myself into buying it. :)

5d wont be that good with low light/high iso. Apart from that I would prefer 5d over 50d. Never owned 50, but had 30d and currently have 40d.

I can confirm that the 5D is perfectly ok at ISO 3200 which as I remember is its max.

Canon's don't like to be pushed too much post capture and in very low light ISO 3200 might mean f1.4 and 1/xx shutter speeds.

Typically I will use around 1/500 shutter speed, ISO 3200 at f2.8 - will the full frame, should noise be "better handled"?

Why don't you ask for someone to dropbox you some high ISO files you can then process yourself?

Personally I was very happy with the performance of my 5D at ISO 3200 but what's acceptable quality is a personal thing. I would however expect a 5D to thrash a 50D at any ISO the 5D can match.

It must be very similair to 50d at iso 3200 but you will win in dynamic range on 5d.

Still got a 5D and it does produce a lovely photo, but one thing nobody has mentioned yet is how much of a dust magnet it can be

No new fangled in built cleaning device, its get the rocket blower and swabs/liquid out, so make sure you are happy to give it a clean yourself

This is why I love this place. Thanks so much guys, I really appreciate you going to the effort. Looks like I'm getting a new camera...

I have a 50D and had a 5D mk 1 (have a mk 3 now) and the look of a 5D picture is always nicer, colours change and merge beautifully, BUT I think the 50D wins on resolution and feels more like a modern camera. However, ask me to choose and I'd grab the 5 over the 50 anytime, unless I thought damage to the camera might happen, then I would grab the 50 as I wouldnt care if it got damaged but I would have been heartbroken if my 5 got damaged.
A word of warning, buy the 5 but you'll want a mk3 before long :)

Might also be a good idea to see if the mirror fix has been done although I think Canon still do the repair work free

Models that serial number start with a 2 or later have a better rear lcd, no green tint like some of the earlier ones

The 24mm Pancake is EFS only. So no it won't work on the full frame 5D.
Also you'll have to remember that with full frame you won't have so much reach in the boxing ring, so you might find the 50mm not getting you close enough to the action.
Is your 50mm f1.8 the older Mk2 or the new Mk3 STM? If it's the Mk2, I'd want to upgrade as it's slow to focus, which is rubbish for sports/action. Either upgrade to the Mk3 STM or to the 50mm f1.4 which would also get you more light ;)

On the subject of focus speed, the 5D will not be as quick to focus as the 50D. It's got a rather old AF system, the 50D's AF system is at least one generation newer.
But if you can have both bodies, then why not, then you can have 2 different lenses on the go at once for boxing ;)

I have a good mix of Canon's including the 50d. The 50d is a far quicker, slicker, better performer in all areas over the 5d mk1 bar image quality. I agree, the images at lower ISOs do have a nicer feel to it, and it suffers less thermal noise than the 50d, but at 1600 and above I was always disappointed in the high ISO performance of the 5d mk1. Both together would be a good solution though :)
