...tosh!

I started using 500px because I was new to photography, was able to look at other people's photos, get challenged and get people to critique my shots in the desperate hope I would improve.

What I've realised, is that it's really just a 'likes for likes' website. You can never know if people like your photos because they're good, or because the people want you to like their photos in return.

Don't even think about trying to get ANY feedback on your shots, because 'great capture v&f' just doesn't quite cut it as far as critique goes!

Perhaps I'm a bit slow on the uptake and perhaps you all already knew this...but I'm a bit fed up with 500px already!

Shame there are no real alternatives (apart from TP of course!)

I don't think any sites like that, Flickr and what ever the others are, are really any good for anything other than 'Nice shot!'. I believe you'll only ever really get good critique on forums like this or in person.

100% agree Mike, it's a like for like site, no real critique whatsoever.

500px is great if you want to browse around some decent images and are looking for ideas.

Like you said the only feedback you get is V & F. The other thing I find is you really have to browse and dig deep to find good images. It seems to me that the website has been hijacked by a few photographers (with not so good images) managing to get a lot of views & votes and always ending up on the front pages

Hi Mike,

Have you tried looking at 1x.com ?
They are very picky about who and what images are posted and the criticisms are genuine and very extensive.
Hope this helps.

Thanks James, I'll look into that, and really appreciate the feedback on the 500px shots just now.

I agree with your comments as far as receiving critique. Outside of this forum I haven't found anywhere that offers worthwhile constructive criticism. I do love 500px just for the quality of images it contains. The standard is almost universally high, which makes a wonderful change to somewhere like Flickr where good images get lost amongst the thousands upon thousands of terrible ones. For that reason I love it and continue to use it, but I never use it expecting to be helped to improve.

Mike,
Do you have a link to your 500 PX photographs?

Do you critique your own photographs before uploading them for a critique.
You may find this post, of mine, and somne of the links in the thread of interest.

Hi Richard,

I'm probably not the best critique of my own work, but always step away from Lightroom for a day or so once I've processed it. That said, I'd love to get to the stage where my PP work is minimal because I've taken a better shot.

Some comments left.
I don't use 500PX very often nowdays.

I noticed all of the comments coming through. Really appreciate the time taken to post. I've also started looking at 1x.com. Seems to be similar to 500px, but includes community and tutorials.

500px is great for finding ideas and inspiration, but as said, as a community it's just a back-slapping exercise.

Absolutely! I've spoken to 500px about this, and they agree that it's a known issue. Apparantly in the summer they have a new 'algorithm' appearing, which will help with the issue. However, I'm not sure how i can see it will stop people liking for likes. It seems more a cultural thing than a technological thing.

Personally, I would take away the liking aspect for the moment and open up the community.

I use 500px as a shop window for some of my better images and as inspiration.

Flickr is a photo sharing site, you can get a bit more out of it.

Both those sites have thousands of photos uploaded everyday so for anyone giving feedback it would be a very time consuming project unless they already know of you through groups or in person.

If you want honest feedback put your photos on here, if you want to be told every snap you take is excellent use facebook :lol:
