hi, just wondering if anyone has used a 500mm mirror lens and what sort of results they got. I may be using one on a nikon D50 so any info would be appreciated. Thanks

I've used one in the past. Mirror lenses usually have a fixed aperture of f8, there are even some cheaper versions fixed at f11. The price is attractive and they tend to be light and compact. A common effect produced by mirror lenses is that out of focus highlights appear as very pronounced donut circles, but it's not necessarily unattractive IMO.

The biggest problem is the small aperture, so you really need very good light to use them. The image quality isn't as good as a none- mirror equivalent, but can still be pretty good.

Not a bad purchase as long as you're aware of it's limitations. :)

Have a read of this article.

You can see the donut effect in this shot...
