I have a 500D and a "Sigma 17-70 mm f2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM" as a general walkabout lens (I'm no pro so general use), I really don't like this lens much so was thinking of changing it.
It's probable I will go FF later this year, so was thinking of investing in the Tamron 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD.
Any views?

I just bought a used Tammy 24-70mm VC and its going back Monday morning, results are poor compared to my Tamron 28-75mm

Unless image stabilisation is important to what you do I would go for a second hand canon equivalent.

Thanks for the replies.

The Tamron is about £850 new with 5 year warranty.
The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L Mark 2 is about £1,800 new there is a used one on eBay with 4 days to run at £1,100. I suspect that price will rise significantly over the next 4 days.
There is a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L Mark 1 on eBay currently with 40mins to run sitting at £770.

I have read in a number of places that the Tamron IQ is better than the Canon Mark 1 but worse than the Canon Mark 2. Although it would be nice to get feedback here.
Assuming the above is correct wrt IQ, I think the better buy would be the Tamron. Unfortunately I can't justify £1,800 for a new toy :(

Sorry to hear this Gary, i had high hopes for this one. I'm suprised to hear the 28-70 being better. I was considering this one too when i go FF.

Hoping its just a poor sample i got, always find it a tad strange when newly introduced lenses turn up on the SH market so quickly

really like the size, feel and weight but quality was very variable through the aperture range and focal length, will buy another one sometime buy like this one will need to be on approval for a return just in case.

If you haven't got your heart set on having VC/IS the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 IF EX DG HSM would be a good alternative. I bought one last august and have used it at 2 events so far, as well as general everyday shooting, and the results have been excellent. It's been used on a 5D3, a 7D and the wife's used it on her 650D and I've been pleasantly surprised and very pleased with the results.

I bought mine from Panamoz when it was at £519 but it's since jumped up to £669 http://panamoz.com/index.php/lens/s...-zoom-lens-for-canon-digital-slr-cameras.html for some reason. It's still a terriffic lens for the price, and compared to a friends Canon MkI that I was going to buy, I find it sharper in the middle and very slightly less on the outside but you can only see the difference when pixel peeping. It's a good size and an easily useable weight too. It'll surely see some more action this year as I'm doing a wedding in july and a couple of birthday shoots soon.
