500D announced. ***Official Thread ***

A fairly logical step forward for the 450d, I'd be interested to see a 1600 iso image from it. Wayne

Grrr. Just bought my 450D and BG-E5!

Mmmm! Thanks for the link Andrew, my question is as I am about to purchase a 50D in the next couple of weeks, do I wait? I am not really bothered about the HD gimmick, looking at the US price for the 500D I am wondering what it will go for over here. Body only only 800 dollars = about £500 but will the shops be putting on another couple of hundred? More decision making :bonk:

Looks pretty good although I'm not entirely sure about the movie mode, I doubt I'd use it.

What features are you buying the 50D for?

You should only have a dilemma if the 500D has these features too.

This is very much like the 50D, but for entry-level users...I would much rather spend the money on a 50D which is bigger and better, than a 500D which is similar in price and some of the specs.

With current exchange rates, I think you'll be looking at an initial price of £650-£700.

Thats true I suppose :) Buying the 50D for all the features the 400D does not have, plus to get the best price now for the 400D. Also having saved up for the 50D for a long time and now have been laid off work, this is going to be my only chance to upgrade for a long time. Nah! I am going with the 50D for sure :woot::woot::woot:

Email from whorehouse express tells me body only is 870 quid!

Seems a lot to me give that only a little more would get you a D300 which is obviously not a entry level consumer SLR!!

Warehouse Express now have it on Pre-Order..

Canon EOS 500D
15.1MP
Full HD recording
ISO 100-3200
3.4FPS

£869.99!!

For that price I can go buy another 50D and a couple of decent CF cards....seriously overpriced for what it is. It is aimed at the entry-level market for 'snappers' as such, and I feel that some people will pay for this kit - Canon are robbing people in my honest opinion.

Tis basically a 400D with 15MP and HD recording.

That body only pricing is insane, I would have expected something around £700, but £870  They are selling the 50D body for £828.

Nice upgrade, although the price seems a little high.

Mind you, all pre-orders are usually list price so this will probably drop once they are more freely available.

Another thing that will be interesting to see, is how the 15mp sensor on the 500D handles, given that many folks say you need high quality glass to get the best out of the 50D.

You can get the 50D from Digitalrev for under £800 :) The 500D is a rip off, but there will be silly people that buy it. They are preying on those people who want to do photography but don't really have any idea - They see the high MP and the recording and they will buy it, totally being conned.

You do know you don't have to buy everything Canon make to be able to take good photos?

WHE are taking orders on it for £869.99 body, £969.99 with 18-55 and £1399.99 with the 18-200

:bang: order a 500D for this price or just get a 40/50 or even a pair of 30's

Snappers? I think you'd do well to have a look at some of the results that good photographers produce with the 400D and 350D cameras, let alone what they would produce with the 500D, which isn't "basically a 400D with 15MP and HD recording" as you put it.....

Yep. Wasn't the 1000D more expensive than the 400D/450D when it first came out?

Thats a scary price tag, Canon seem to be repositioning the xxxd bodies at a slightly higher level and making more room for future entry level xxxxd models. Even the 450D seems very expensive cmpared to the price of the 400D. Still glad I picked up my 30D for £350 a5 months ago!

I bought my 40D last April, at the time the 450D wasn't much less in cost, probably £150 less tops. So not totally surprised at the high cost of this, though I don't know how this compares to the cost of the 50D at the moment.

I would if the link worked ;)

The WHE price look to be way over the odd looking at Canon Press realease

The Canon EOS Rebel T1i Digital SLR Camera is scheduled for delivery by early May and will be sold in a body-only configuration which includes a rechargeable battery pack and charger, USB and video cables, a neckstrap, an EOS Solutions Disk CD and a 1-year Canon U.S.A., Inc. limited warranty at an estimated retail price of $799.99. It will additionally be offered in a kit version with Canon's EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens at an estimated retail price of $899.99.

Oh come on everyone you have missed Canon important announcement

Canon Speedlite 270EX

The new Canon Speedlite 270EX, the successor to the 220EX Speedlite model, is a compact, lightweight external flash option for Canon cameras including select Canon PowerShot models. Ideal for use with the new EOS Rebel T1i, the new Speedlite 270EX uses only two AA batteries and enables bounce flash shooting with four position steps from 0 degrees to 90 degrees. Like Canon's high-end Speedlite flash models, the 270EX allows users to control flash functions and input settings using the camera's LCD monitorv. The flash also features a quick-lock mechanism and a metal mounting foot for secure and easy attachment and reliable contact.

It's not a link....
I wanted to underline the fact that there are good photographers and no doubt some professionals out there that use the models that are apparently aimed at 'snappers'. :D

I don't think that the remark was suggesting that 400D/450D/500D is aimed at 'snappers'.

In context there are a large number of people out there who have no direct interest in photography that just want to take better pictures. The worry is that they will be tempted in to the market for this lower end camera and then part company with over £800.

I know of a few people that have bought DSLR's "coz they (the camera's) take better pictures."

Those that have an interest in photography know that this is not true and stunning photo's can be achieved by someone with a little knowledge using a compact.

As noted i think the worry is that people will be conned in to parting with alot of money for a camera that may not be entirely worth the cost.

The price will fall, it always does, even if Canon have raised prices overall because of exchange rates (and also the fact their economy is in a bigger mess than elsewhere).

Reckon on £550 in the shops by end May.

If i was a 350/400 or even a 450D owner i'd want to see some serious reviews on image quality first before i parted with £250-300 to change. This pixel count race is a farce - cramming more into the same sensor space is losing as much qaulity as it supposedly gains. And at those prices they aren't going to drag many new 'photogrpahers' out of their pocket cameras. The only thing it will do is make the 1000D look value all of a sudden !

I can't get my head around the 1000D. My 1st SLR was a 400D, then out came the 450D shortly followed by the 1000D. I always thought the XXXD models were the cheaper consumer models, the XXD were the prosumer models then the XD was the pro ones so where does the XXXXD fit in!

xxxxD < xxxD < xxD < xD is canon's line of thinking - they inctroduced the 1000D as a step lower than anything seen previously

I seem to remember the 50D having a pre-order price of about £1300 when it was announced. I would imagine the 500D will soon drop by 20-30% once released!

It's priced so high becuase it's just been announced. Price will drop within months. All DSLRs have extortionate starting prices. It will drop in price even before it hits the high street stores.

XXXD and XXXD are entry level, XXD is consumer and XD is semi-pro/pro.

I would never buy a new camera just after it has been announced, the price falls dramatically soon after. I hope this will drive the prices of other ones down, especially 450d and 40D

Yes, thanks for that, really -- it's still slightly annoying paying out £580 just a month ago for the latest D-SLR of that range, only to have a new one released a month later. I could have just bought a 400D for £180 if I knew it would had been this quick, or at least waited for it!

I know that's life and everything, but it's still proper quick and unexpected.

The 450D was released in May 2008 wasn't it? If so, this is about right, they tend to bring new models out every 12-18 months. It sounds like a good camera, but, as with the 50D, cramming that many pixels onto a crop-sized sensor is going to cause just as many problems as it solves.

And the price is ridiculous at the moment, but I'd expect at last £250 to come off that by mid-summer, if not more.
