Evening,

I have been directed this way by the old owner of my 500D, as I need some guidance. Being an old point and shoot owner I am slight overcome with settings

so, a noddy guide that I can read is required, which of these would anyone recommend

Thanks in advance :ty:

oh and expect many more questions about settings, kit and future purchases :exit:

Hi and welcome to TP.

Either of the books would be a help for you if you hep with the body. Don't forget the Canon manual is a good source of information as well...And read through various threads on TP as they can offer assistance. A look in the critiques of photographs sections for photos you want to shoot can really help, if the settings used for a shot are not listed, ask what they were as this can gee you a starting point.

Don't worry about asking many more questions, there are lots of helpful bods on here, who can help...

Hi

I have the Field Guide for the 550d and it is a great little book full of info and easy to understand.

Perhaps you need more of a basic photography tutorial than a camera guide* to tell you how changing settings changes pictures? In which case, the tutorials section on here is as good a place as any.

* Camera operation is covered in the handbook. If you haven't got one, then download a pdf version from Canon.

I don't know how much you already know about photography but you need to understand aperture, shutter speed and ISO, how they relate to each other and the effect they have on the final image.

As Richard has said there are tutorials on this site, and there are also lots of others on the Web, eg http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/ but if you google for 'understanding aperture, shutter speed and ISO', you will find loads.
