Non UK 5 to 7 days in Japan

Any suggestions for a 5 to 7 day Japan tour in April.
We want to fly into Tokyo then spend a day or two there but have no idea where to go from there. How is it getting around Japan as a Foreigner (only English language)
Any advice suggestions would be much appreaceated

This is based on the only time I've been which was in 2000. In the cities you'll be fine. People are always helpful even though they may not speak English (lots do) and are perfectly used to "funny foreigners". Smaller towns not so much. Even things like reading signs and maps can be tricky. I remember at one time my plan for getting home was to get on a train with 2 characters on the front - not 3 or 1.

They are both longish trips but if you get the chance then Hiroshima and Kyoto are both mind blowing.
