Has anyone used one of these 5 in 1 adapters with success? I'm looking for one for the IPad (original).

I don't know anything about that "5-in-1 adapters" with iPad, but I do use the Apple camera connention kit (£25 if new) which contends an adapter for SD cards and an adapter for USB, I use the adapter for the USB a lot more as my Nikon takes CF and my 12 years old Olympus takes SmartMedia, so I have to make do with USB leads, and i have no problems, I uploaded my photos very well.

By the way, my iPad is 1st generation too.

HEY!! I just had a brainstorm! Hmmmmm, I wonder, I never thought of using the USB adapter with a mobile phone, I wonder if I can hook up the phone to the iPad using the phone's own USB cabel with the iPad's USB adapter?

Thanks, I think I will go for the camera connector rather than this third party bit of gear.
As for hooking up the iPhone, don't see why not.

It wasn't iPhone I tried, it was Nokia 6100, it nearly worked but not good enough, still I'm pretty surprised that my 12 years old Olympus can still upload photos via USB connector kit and USB cabel.

You can get it for £25 from either an Apple shop or from most shops, including HMV.

Check the camera connector does not mess up your SD card. I have one and used the card reader to copy photos to my iPad when travelling in India recently so I had a backup. After the first upload my Fuji X100 took ages to resume from sleep mode. I Googled around and found that, typically for them, Apple dump something on the SD card which caused the X100 to falter when restarting. Formatting the SD card sorted it out, but that rather defeats the object of copying to the iPad when travelling to have two copies of my photos for security. I'm looking for another option to do this now.

So check that Apple being (arrogant) Apple does not mess with your camera too. Unless formatting is something you don't mind doing after each upload that is.

Apple do their best to make sure you can't buy/use 3rd party stuff with your iPad, they do add files to your memory cards, but this is something to do with indexing for iTunes.

Using anything non-Apple with the iPad is just too much hassle IMO. I spent a few hours trying to get my GFs photo's onto her iPad so she could put them on Facebook (over WiFi), because iPad stores files by app rather than using conventional folders, it was just a nightmare.

In the end I gave up and let her use my laptop (which took all of 2 minutes).

smart companies seek to protect their profits

I'm not saying they're not clever, it takes some seriously good marketing to sell fashionable technology, their main market is people who are a bit technophobic, people who follow fashion and the heavily socially influenced.
Not only that, but balancing your prices to what the entire planet can just about afford to slap on their credit cards, not too high, not too low, takes some serious genius and research.

They know that people like me won't touch their stuff and at no point will they ever try to tap into that market (hardcore PC geeks/gamers), they know they'd just get torn apart AND it'd impact their core market, by making their products less "cool".

What I like is the ability to use any mix of hardware and a little hard work to achieve what Apple products achieve, but with me remaining 100% in control of my hardware and data.

I'd never argue that Apple are not good at what they do, they bring tech to the masses at a massive price and treat them like cash cows without them realising it. I don't know many companies that even come close to doing that quite so successfully.

Write-protect the card before inserting?

Not tried it myself, but maybe a way to prevent any issues from occurring.

Not sure if it has that capability, but a good idea. I'll check it out.

Tbh it's the X100 at fault in that instance, I had same problem when I owned one.
