4TB Western Digital Mybook recertified £60

Actually good way to get hold of cheap RED drives if you are willing to take it apart.

It's a good deal anyway, I just bought a 4TB, I already have a 2TB.

Just opened the one I bought a few weeks ago and the drive in that one is a WD40EZRZ which I believe is the WD blue.

What makes you say that? Have you taken then apart?

I have posted two sources above both claiming they are.

Yes, I have four of them in my server, all blue drives. The subject of this post is WD 4TB drives and your links refer to 8TB drives...............your 1st link only presumes it's a red drive inside.

How well does this one work these days? When they first started appearing on the market, I'd bought one and it was terrible. It was so slow to open and transfer files to/from the device even with 50mb/s fibre with good upload speeds.

I'd like one again but would want it to be much faster than before.

ah ok. hmmm... I thought they would have had same class of drives in all of them.

there are offers on the other versions too but not the 8TB ones. may be for this reason....

Hi

These are not like nas drives, they are usb3 so not sure if you are thinking of the same type.

I know they're not :) do these not update over the air? I wanted a central hub to access photos, movies etc from any device in the house. I'm not looking for a NAS.

No, they have to be connected to a pc or Mac via a usb so not ethernet or wifi connection.

I think what you are looking for is a NAS,
This might suit you

I have had to put my drive back in the wd caddy as my Mac would only read it as 1.8tb when I had it plugged into a USB dock.[emoji849]

Weird, but probably down to formatting.

All drives reserve space for boot managers etc. You'll never get the drive space that is advertised because of this. 1.8TB useable space on a 2TB drive sounds about right. Its the same with all drives I'm afraid.

I think it was a 4TB that was purchased?

The post only insinuates that the old one was 4TB but doesn't give details on the newer one so I assumed 2TB based on the size. Sorry for confusion if this is incorrect.

If it is indeed 4TB and only showing 1.8TB then its a formatting, chipset or driver issue.

The drive is a 4tb one, formatted for Mac. In the wd my box case it shows correctly as a 4tb drive, but if I put the same drive in a usb dock or a Iomega FireWire/usb caddy it only show the drive as a 2tb.

So it may be that both the usb dock and the Iomega caddy I am using are old and only supports drives upto 2tb.

Anyone use larger drives in other FireWire type caddies or usb with a power switch on the caddy?

Thank you
