Posting in here as its more specific to this job rather than a general dongle question

I ahve a THREE 3g mifi that I bought off here.. its been brill and I got 12 months credit.. It runs out at the end of november..

I would like somehting simmilar.. I had PAYG and paid for 1gb per month a yrs supplyt for the price of about 10 mths..

I did all that on advice from here as I really wasnt sure whats was what.. so whats the best deal now.. Dont want to tie to a contract.. but dont mind paying a yr up front.. would rather a tenner a month.. its hardly used.. maybe once a week to send pics.. if I can gte 4g then great..

dont want plugin dongle ... mifi thing is great

Call 3 mate and ask them to upgrade you to the latest 4G Mi-Fi unit, they shoud offer it as a matter of course after 12 month anyway

Why a dongle ? , you could use hotspot on your phone, less to loss & pay for.

no data on my phone..
Oh ok, Just that I gave my dongle back and just connect my laptop to my Iphone. Deals on talk time & Data + a new phone are quiet cheap, something to think about

Absolutely no chance, they don't give free equipment away to PAYG users.

yeagh will look into it on my phone....its an option worth considering thanks:)

nobody else using a 4g deal for light usage?

i bought the mifi off here so cant even show i bought it..

It wouldn't really matter, the way things are now it's hard enough getting a decent upgrade on a contract, let alone PAYG.

I think perhaps Gary just isn't all that clear on the difference between PAYG and contract.

Have you considered just getting another prepaid PAYG sim? There are still very few 4G capable cheap mifi devices, so your choices would be fairly limited (and so still quite expensive). It might be easier to find a cheap 4G mifi + data bundle in another 6-12 months.

EE is probably the best choice if you are really wanting something now, you should be able to get 4G EE SIM cards with 6GB for 90 days for around £15 (just use and throw away every 90 days).

4G mifi devices start around £40-45.

:) I thought it was clear.. thats really what i was asking.. so yeagh have considered:) and the info you provided just what am looking for.. 6 gig 90 day things sounds just the ticket actually..

thanks:)

so the mifi listed there unlocked? if i get that and ee sim? and later can get a three sim if a good deal and still work?

Yes, that link is to an unlocked one. So should be good to go with any 3G/4G sim.

with regard to the sims, I've used a few of them, they work very well in a dongle/tablet/mifi, just insert and go.

That mifi unit looks great. Not confuse the issue and I realise the OP has no data on his phone, but are those units more reliable than using an iPhone's personal hotspot? That's what I do. I'm assuming that as it's just done through a SIM card there would be little difference? Or as they are just specifically for wifi do they have a better signal?

Not sure what other phones can set up personal hotspots but maybe upgrading to a mobile contract or PAYG with 4G data could be another option? I guess essentially a smart phone is already a mifi unit?

i think i will stick to the mifi idea.. worked well all last season..

i have upgraded my phone from a little nokia with snake and texting.. to a proper phone..just been going through menus.. it has mobile data and ability to ste hospots... but the problem is.. i havent the foggiest idea what that means

Haha! Fair. Basically, it just means you can set up your phone to kind of project it's internet connection out in a wifi signal. You can have a password on it so only you can use it, you just search for wifi networks on the laptop and connect to your phones.

It has worked pretty well for me, though obviously if you don't have a decent phone signal, you don't have a decent internet signal, but I'm presuming the same is true of a mifi unit?

Understand that you've discounted it but just thought I'd briefly explain anyway!

Just a sec, Tony, looks like the seller of the mifi is being creative with words, that seems to be a 3G mifi (it will work with 4G sim, just not at 4G speeds).

I'll have another look.

Mate, you have a contract with 3 with your sim, call them and ask for a 4g mi-fi upgrade, they dont care that you haven't bought your existing one from them or not, you are happy with their service and their products, yes, then stick with them and dont run up your arse trying to find something that doesnt work

Actually best to call into your nearest 3 shop or you could end up in a senseless conversation with Keith or Julie from Bangladesh

Gary, I had a contract with 3 for 4 years & they still wouldn't swap my mini unit for free!, they wanted £70 (discounted from £99). That's why I sold it to Tony , I too bought an unlocked Acatel mifi unit & buy an EE 6 gig data card for £15 every 3 months.

So its all your fault LOL

Wasnt meaning he would get it for free but if youre happy with the service and their equipment in general surely they would be your first port of call

I've had 3 Mi-Fi (well, had two at some point as they were faster than my home broadband)... contracts ran out, got a call from 3 and was offered 4G Mi-Fi free of charge .. same monthly charge and same allowance.
Didn't even have to pay for the new 4G Mi-Fi.
Still got my 15 GB per month for £14.99 - although I live in a part of the country where 4G won't come for another 50 years.. but it helps me on my work assignments and also the 'Feel At Home' is pretty good for me as I have plenty of jobs on the Continent so can use the Mi-Fi just as I would at home..

I rercall you saying at the time.. and the mifi has been great thanks.. its covered in ink.. its been in water and still works :) i doubt three will be interested BUT I dont want a contract and AFAIK thats all they have for 4g

still open to ideas and going to look into it thanks ... currently my phone is on a PAYG sim that doesnt have any data.. its 10 quid and not even monthly.. just until it runs out then another 10 quid... i rarely make a call and dont use texts so a tennner last yonks.... have a feeling using data on phone pushes me to x amount a month... the 15 quid for 3 months is ideal for my usage

its still on my screen ready for a decision.. best get rid then.. will take a look at the other links now.... appreciate your time.. thanks :)

I get it mate :) was trying to upgrade to 4g .. I could just get another sim for this and carry on... to upgrade wiht THREE means going on a monthly plan :( the 3mth for 15 quid is perfect and on an unlocked mifi means i could change it to THREE if and when they get better deals...

well thats my thinking..it may be flawed though as I aint no expert on all this.. learning though :)

Thinking what everyones said.. had a rethink.,

currentl plan would be (for yr)
phone £60 a year for the phone topups as not used greatly
mifi 50-60 to buy
mifi sim 4 x 15 quid = 60

So current plan will cost me 180 for the 1st yr and 120 for 2nd yr (no mifi to buy)

looking at the THREE website and thinking what @Gary Coyle said..I am happy with THREE ..It seems I can get (for the phone and use as hotspot like @gibtheo says) 2gb DATA 4g and small usage for for 10 quid a month.. 120 for yr.. which is a better deal (or nlimited DATA and small phone usage for 15 a month...

or am I reading this wrong?

doesnt my logic work? my dongle was always THREE so would working through the phone really be as good a plan?

Sounds like sense to me. The only thing I'm unsure of is if there is better connectivity with a mifi unit for some reason as I have only used one a couple of times. As I say if it's running on a sim I can't see how it'd differ speed wise but would be nice if anyone could confirm.

£10.87 a month gets the brand new 4G mi-fi and 1GB allowance on a 24 month contract with no upfront costs, or £15.99 and 5GB of data on a 1 month contract and only £39.99 up front, the latter is a good deal as you can bail out after 1 month and keep the 4G MI-FI unit and its only cost you £55.99 for the unit which normally costs £99

http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Devices/Huawei/E5372_4G_Mobile_Wi-Fi (expand more plans for the 5GB data deal)

Bear in mind your phone (same as mine) isnt a 4G compatible phone

gary a mifi at 15 quid for three months is a cheaper option than the mifi your listing surely?..if I go mifi then its buy one and 15 quid for 3 months.. not tied to a contract and a cheap option..

but the phone sounds workable

exactly.... need someone using the phone to let us know how stable/good/bad ? it is apposed to mifi

Your phone isnt a 4G phone (if its the same one as mine which you bought)

Wheres this option????????

To put this into simple terms

Pay £39.99 up front for the very latest 4G Mi-Fi unit, then pay £15.99 a month for 5GB on a 1 month rolling contract which after 1 month you can get out of anytime you want and keep the Mi-Fi unit

Essentially contract free

oh? could ahve said a couple of posts ago ya tease :) didnt know that... right plan A out the window haha

good grief gary ... thats £230 for the year! how does that beat a 50 quid mifi and 60 quid for a yrs 4g? ar 10 a month for 2gb or 15 quid a month unlimited data?
