I have just picked up 2x 430's and a 580

if when using the 580 as master and the 430 as slaves, and the 430s in softbox/umbralla will i need radio trigger or will they fire (most of the time) as a slave?

or do they need to be visable?

thanks

If it's indoors, the 430s will most likely fire satisfactorily, as the light signals from the 580 will be able to bounce around nicely. When you get it set up in any particular location, just hit the test button on the 580 and the slave flashes should fire (Group A, followed by Group B)

I believe they are triggered by infra-red light, so you will need roughly line of sight between the front of them, but it will be much like a remote control for a tv where you only need to aim vaguely and the light will bounce off white walls etc.

Depending on what camera you have you can also use the dof button to see them in 'modelling light' mode, rapid strobing, very usefull.

The slaves don't necessarily need line of sight - they just need a decent amount of light to signal. Mine work fine behind furniture and all sorts indoors.

Outside it's a different matter and line of sight will maximise range, but for a normal indoor studio set up you won't have any trouble at all.
