Hello,

I currently have a 5D mkII and 430EX and am looking to set it up as an off camera flash for portraits.

My birthday is coming up, so thought it an ideal opportunity for people to buy me the required equipment to set the off camera flash up.

What will I need to do this? All recommendations will be greatly appreciated!!

Mike

RF-602 set to get off camera (ebay as I don't believe FITP has any stock left).

Then it depends on what you want to shoot as to brollys/light boxes/backgrounds etc...

What sort of different lighting effects would I expect from a light box and a brolly.

What stand and brackets will I need, and where is best to get them from?

I had seen a background set up for £79 on eBay that I was considering.

you will need:

light stands.
softboxes that have mounts to fit a speedlight and not a studio faslh head,
If you want to use an umbrella then an umbrella adapter to fix it to the light stand.(this also mounts the umbrella)
trigger and receiver

AS for different effects there is a website that shows the different effects created by lighting modifiers. Cant recall it but im sure someone will be along shortly to show you.

RF602s from Graham or ebay
a calumet dual duty 36" brolly
a calumet umbrella adaptor
a calumet compact lightstand

some bungies to hold the brolly to the stand and a shoulder strap

thats my go to rig :D

Thanks very much for all the help, looks like I got a bit of reading ahead of me :)

Any recommendations on makes of equipment, or is it all pritty standard stuff??

as you may have noticed I like calumet branded, manfrotto is the best but fairly dear (001b stand and 026 adapter) random stuff on ebay tends to be a bit pants

Hi Mike,

I am almost in the same position as yourself, looking at setting up suitable lighting equipment.

I recently upgraded my camera to a 7D and obtained a 580 EXII flash unit off TP and am looking at other lighting arrangements.

Are you in a local club? I am located in Wythall, a few miles from Solihull and would be interested to know what you get.

Hello Malcolm

Im not currently a member of a club, but am looking at two local ones, just need to decide which to join.

I will gladly add picture once I have the equipment in hand, just trying to narrow down my options.

Prepose setup:

RF-602

Calumet Swivel Umbrella Adapter

then Im stuck on the brolly and stand choices

Brolly

Calumet 36" (91cm) Silver/White Umbrella

or

Interfit 109cm Translucent Umbrella with Silver/Black Cover

Stand

Lastolite Lumen8 Pneumatic Lighting Stand

or

Bowens Compact Light Stand

Then there is this bundel I found

What would people recomend?

Get the westcott set up, the triggers or a long ETTL lead or an ST-E2 command unit.

As you only have the one flash at present get an oval 60" x 40" reflector, a holder and stand are a bonus with it as well.

Backgrounds depend on space, I only have a tiny space so picked up a 3m x 2m pop up background and train from ebay.

Hi Mike,

thanks for responding. The selection you are looking at seems good, but there are so many producers of equipment and personally I would prefer to actually see the product before buying.

Have you thought of a trip up to Leicester ( about 3/4 hour) to see the Lastolite company and equipment. Checkout their web site, they have many video tutorials and ideas that you may find interesting, I almost went last week but something came up and am still thinking it could be worth a look before I decide what to buy. Also the various reflectors they have seem to be good and can add considerably to the setup, both for inside and outside use. I quite like to look of their small softbox.

Try and checkout their website.

I also saw on TP Locations a recent flash photo shoot in Stoke on Trent, where a number of like minded photographers got together to shoot for the day in a village hall with many taking their own gear. Look it up, the guy that organised it is James, (Photoshooter), and they may be holding another shoot in November and I have already expressed my interest if they do.

I look forward to hearing more on your quest. If you PM me your phone number, we can chat further.

Malcolm
