I have a 430EX II with 5D MKIII. I'm spent much of the day learning about off camera flash and want to start trying this out for myself. Can the 5D MK III control the 430EX II without any additional equipment? I've noticed that wireless transmitters are quite expensive, so don't really want to go down that route if I can help it. I'm hoping to mainly focus on newborn and 'early years' photos, so I'm thinking I may have to get a wired trigger if the camera doesn't support it out the box. Any setup suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The simple answer is no, as the 5D3 does not have a built in flash to transmit the necessary protocol to the flash when it is off the camera. The Canon IR transmitter is very expensive and line of sight only. The cheaper options are to use a hot shoe to flash cord which has a limited operating distance from the camera or to use a wireless transmitter/receiver such as the Youngnuo YN622C, two would be required. These can be used in either Manual mode or offer TTL exposure. The range is good and does not require line of sight. Control would be via the 5D3 menu system, unless one of the YN622Cs is replaced with the YN622TX, which allows simpler control with a built in screen menu. A Youtube video is worth a view.

:plus1:

The Youngnuo YN622C work great for me, you can pick up a pair on Amazon for just about £50

Brilliant. Thanks for such a clear and concise answer. Sounds like a simple but effective setup :)
