Hi all you lighting gurus, I`m trying to get to grips with this flash buisness, and it certainly is like going to the dark side.
In the manual it says when setting up in P or fully auto that when you press the shutter hlf way the maximum effective rang will show, my unit doesn`t show anything except
ETTL Zoom -- mm

This doesn`t change no matter what setting I have it on unless I actually press the zoom button get it flashing then alter zoom level, but still no effective range.

HELP

Cheers in advance

Phil

Just tried on mine and it shows 18 under the Zoom xxmm and an m to the right hand side. This is with the kit 18-55 lens on a 450D. This seems to come up on all modes on the camera and in ETTL and Manual on the flash. If you put the flash on manual and drop the power the distance reduces as expected.

Have you checked that none of the flash custom functions are set.

Also remember reading somewhere that not all lenses transmit distance data. Not sure if this could be an issue

just checked the settings on my 450D and in the Flash Control/External Flash C. Fn setting menu. Setting 14 changes the display to show F-Stop instead of maximum distance.

i had this too. it only works with the flash at 90 degrees. ie pointed straight forward. I thought mine was broke when i first got it but a search on the net sorted me out
hope that helps

The flash must be on the camera, pointing forward, with the lens attached and f/number set.

That's the only way the flash knows what it's expected to do and so can make a (very rough) stab at what its potential range might be.

If it is not set up like this, or the flash head is pointing anywhere but straight ahead, it has no idea what you're expecting it to do.

Thanksa for all your help guys, sorted. Happy togging for 2010!!

glad you got it sorted. I couldnt find that info in the manual. thank god for the internet or i may have travelled to take mine back after xmas
