Hey all, I'm no strobist expert but I'm having a bit of a bond moment with my 430EX (MkI) on camera with the AF Assist & modelling flash. I've read the manual on custom functions but I'm still a bit lost!

Basically I want to turn the AF-assist cross beam on OR the modelling flash but I can't seam to get either on! I've turned all of the 430EX's custom functions to their default ("0") and turned "AF Assist beam emits" in camera to "Emits" but still nothing. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've had problems with this before and solved it but this time I'm stumped! :bonk:

Appreciate your help :)

Right, still messing about. I've put the 430EX on my second body (a 400D) and it fires the AF assist beam no problem. All on camera custom functions are set to the same values except for one which is to enable back button auto focusing. If I set it back to "0" though and press the FEL button ("*") on the back of the body it sends off a pre-flash but half pressing the shutter doesn't emit the AF-assist cross beam :(

Not sure i know what modelling flash is :)

thought the AF assist was automatic and only worked in low light or poor focussing conditions. Are you testing in the dark?

edit.. found it. modelling flash is a burst when you press depth of field preview. learn something new every day :)

Yep, that's correct about the DoF button. I solved the problem too. Ruddy AI Servo was disabling the AF-Assist beam!!:bang:
