Yes
I'm a Canadian living in the UK and I'll be heading home at the end of next month (for 2 weeks). I'm in need of a 40D, so my two options are: (1) Buy brand new in the UK, or (2) Buy used in the US. (Canadian prices are terrible).

The good news about the UK is that the 40D is surprisingly cheap -- in fact, it seems it's cheaper than US prices (at the moment and until June 30: £499 with cashback). I can easily find a used 40D from the FredMiranda forums for $900 = £450. Add in the cross-border taxes, and I'd estimate it would come down to about $940-960 or £470-£480.

It seems wiser on my part to just buy the 40D from the UK and deal with the $40-60 difference.

Are there any deals with buying a new 40D from a UK reseller? Maybe free stuff? Free CF cards, free bags, etc.?

Have you thought about warranty, your UK bought 40d wont be covered in Canada, this would seem to negate any small price difference to me given that there seems to be plenty of dodgy focussing 40d's

Try Kerso!

As said previously, you need to consider the warranty period, and where you will be for the majority of the time the kit is under warranty. From your post it looks like you are only going home for a couple of weeks then coming back? If you are planning on staying in the UK for a year (or whatever Canon's warranty period is) then I would buy UK - one warranty return alone is going to eat the $40 in shipping costs, not to mention the extra time....

I know people tend to think the warranty is all important but it doesn't need to be. A) the vast majority of cameras do not fail within the warranty period and B) you can buy an international warranty for a reasonable price from MackCam (within 30 days of buying the camera).

So buy the camera where you get the best deal and worry about warranty afterwards.

Warranties are important when you come to need them - I find that generally the only people who say they are not worth having are those who have never had to use one!! As the kit comes with a manufacturers warranty out of the box, why not use it, rather than take a chance with a 3rd party?

Agreed, if you are going to save considerably more than the cost of the warranty... for the sake of $40, and piece of mind, it's got to be better to buy one where you are going to be locally...

IMO, of course!!
