Hi folks,

I have had my 40D for years, I love it its been the best camera or bit of tech I have ever bought but I am thinking of upgrading to a 7D simply becuase they are a great price at the minute and I have some money to spend. The reason for the 7D would be the AF system and video which is would be an upgrade on the 40D however will I take a hit on IQ? For the age of the camera the 40D's images have always been great with me, the ISO has been usable up to 800 and bar the odd missfocased shot I have never had any problems with the 7D be the same?

Anyone recently made the change?

Some claim the 7d is about a stop better, some that these nothing in it.

For me, I've always thought the 7d is better (I regularly use both). It also goes higher, which is useful, unless you're one of those 'can't use anything over 800' types who never prints and has never seen an iso800 print from film.

No I have no problem pumping up the ISO if needs be, I have never used anything other than the 9 point focus of the 40D, usually just using the centre point and then recomposing, you think owning 7D will change that? I love the feel of the 40D, the metal body really does feel so good, I wish Canon had kept it in the newer "semi-pro" models.

I made that excact same move a few years ago. Loved my 40D and only upgraded to a 7D at the time due to my 40D biting the dust.

The main things that struck me at the time were the much, much better AF, the jump in megapixel count (to allow for heavier cropping) and a few more modern features which escape me at the moment. Didn't notice a massive change in ISO handling ability (which I think is as much a compliment to the 40D as a slight on the 7D).

All depends what you shoot too really. If you're into sports, birds or anything that requires better AF then then the 7D will blow your socks off. I bought mine for landscape use and in hindsight it was a mistake as most of the features that set the 7D apart don't lend themselves to landscapes (eg much better AF and much higher FPS).

ps. the 7D is built like a tank, much the same as the 40D. Check out the DigitalRev disctruction test on YouTube! :)

I had the 40D and moved 7D have to admit I was not that pleased you don't mention what glass you have and this is only my opinion but the 7D needs L glass far more than the 40D I was happy at 1600iso and if needs must would use 3200iso on the 40D however even at 1600iso on the 7D I was not very happy

I do print a fair bit upto a3 super and for my money the 1600iso on the 7D was nicer than the 800iso on the 7D

One final issue the 7D was less forgiving of exposure error post process in raw I felt.

Full frame different issue the 5Dmkii is the 40D but with much better ISO

I have owned a 7D for some years. I upgraded from a 10D. I've always loved using the 7D, and it is especially good for sports. Ive used the ISO up to 800 with no significant image issues. I DO use only L lens though (apart from my Sigma 10 - 20), and it's especially good with the 24 - 105. I shoot a lot of landscape and cityscape. For that reason I have just bought a 5D2 because I want the full frame for that. If you want to use the 7D for landscape it's perfectly good, you just have to suffer the crop factor. I am not parting with the 7D though because it's served me well and the image quality has always been excellent. I don't know the 40D, but I would heartily recommend the 7D .... but lens quality always has a part to play as well ;)

I also went from a 40D to a 7D but it was via a 550D which I bought first but missed the controls of the 40D so ended up getting a 7D
to be honest I can't really see much difference between them in image quality up to Iso 800
the newer cameras are slightly better at high iso but there's not much in it
the extra pixels are handy if you need to crop but I do try to avoid doing that:)

Thanks for the opinions guys, I think I am maybe just likeing the lure of new tech but wont see that much benifit as I love the images I get from the 40D..... hmmmmm what do do. Might keep my powder dry and try and find a nice 5DII.

I went from a 40D to a 7D a few years back and TBH I thought that there was a huge improvement, certainly on AF speed and IQ
Now that could always be down to me "improving" of course.
But I used "L" glass on both, and found the 7D IQ much better, than over the 40D
This maybe due to the Dual DIGIC 4 image processors.
There was a slight improvement on the ISO handling
but not quite as much as I had hoped, and I find the 7D better at 800 iso than 400 iso for some strange reason.

Baring in mind that the 7D is now 5 years old, and dependeding on your budget,
the 7DII is starting to get a few rave reviews.
(There is a thread on here)

Simply couldnt justify a 7DII the wife would kill me as we have a new born in the house, I can dream though :D.

Had both, 7D was a great camera let down by image quality.

Yes that was tongue in cheek before anyone gets all serious, but less mp and weaker aa filter would have made it superb.

Would like to try one with the Sony 16mp sensor and no aa filter, AF, build and customising features were top class

Have you considered a new lens instead of a body change? While the 7D is undoubtedly quicker AF wise would that solve your requirement by itself. Image quality won't be light years ahead between the two bodies but new sharp glass could make the difference for you. This of course is ignoring your video requirement though.

What were you not happy with?

If I remember correctly there was someone who posted a method for processing higher ISO images from the 7D on here. Do you use any noise reduction programmes?
