As the subject says. Assuming similar second hand quality which would you go for.

Pictures of the kids and landscape/holiday shots mainly.

Budget for lenses will be circa £300 with the 40d just being an option to spend less overall.

5d lens choices probably 50mm 1.8 and a sigma/tamron. 17-50ish or 17-70

40d would probably be a similar lens lens selection with the added bonus of potential extra purchases to follow.

Decision time.

40D would be my choice and strangely enough was, not sure those lenses you named for the 5D are designed for full frame either

The 17-50 or 17-70 won't work

Didn't think they would, something like the 17-40 would be good for landscapes or maybe a 24-105mm for allround use, neither are cheap though.

No expert, but reckon the 5D would need better quality lenses to get the best from it or conversely not to show up any shortcomings

Depends what you want to shoot, for me I'd jump on a 5D but thats for my usage

So 40D
+ 6.5fps
+ nice AF
+ live view
+ better screen
+ extra reach from crop
+ lots of cheaper ef-s lenses

5D
+ more megapixelage
+ less noise
+ magic dreamy images
+ less distorted wide angles (weird one this, you notice more stepping up to medium format)
+ shallower dof

It makes the 5D sound like quite a tough sell, I know i want one and i know why! If i just wanted a pro/semi-pro camera at that price point i'd probably go for a 50D instead (or Nikon d300 would be tempting)

The other issue with the 5D is it will show up poor lenses a bit more and you can't really use the crop lenses (sometimes technically you can but... not seriously)

I have both the 40D and the 5D but I had the 24/105 to go with the 5D.
A used 40D will cost around £300-350 while a good 5D will be around £700.
Personally I would go for the 40D and try to find a Canon 15-85 ,its the crop equivalent of the 24/105 but without the constant aperture.
I have not used one but by all accounts its very good.

Ok. 5d it is. I can't resist the full frame and will upgrade lenses over time.

Lenses I am looking at are still 50mm 1.8 but with the option of
Sigma 24-70 2.8 and 28-70 2.8
Tamron 28-105 2.8 or 28-75 2.8

I like the idea of constant 2.8 and a 24 mm wide angle.

Any feedback or experience on these lenses would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

When you say holiday shots are you talking beachside?
If you are I'd get a 40D, if you get (and fall in love with) a 5D you wont risk it at the seaside :)

Matt

Another vote for lenses first, the 5D will show up flaws in lenses.

Its done. I saw the light and went with the 40d. Managed to get one with the 17-85 canon lens for 480. I now have about £500 to spend on some prime lenses. Thinking sigma 30mm and canon 50mm f1.4 may just about creep in to that budget.

Thanks to those who posted with camera advice.
