Hi All,

Quick question.

I've bought a 2nd hand 40D.

I put the 50mm f1.8 on it to try taking a few pictures.

In Auto-mode, when I half-press the shutter, the on camera flash fires a few times while focussing before the shot is taken.

Why is this?

I've since reset all the camera settings and it isn't happening, but wondered what it was all about.

Thanks,

WTP

p.s. I think it's time to read the Manual (can be hard for a bloke ;) )

I'm fairly sure its a AF assist flash that your seeing.

It's normal. The 40D does not have a focus assist lamp, so it strobes the on board flash a few times to help focus.

The flash popping up and strobing used to really annoy me. I bought a Canon 430EX ii flash and it now focuses very quickly in low light. Getting the flash was the best thing I ever did.

I think you can turn it off in the setting I don't have a 40d at the minute to check. I used the 50 f1.8 with low light with out any focus asits before with out much problems.

Or as Fatmarly segests a flash with Focus beam is a far better way to get focus, I used 430, 580 and also the ST-E2 (but it is temperamental for triggering flashs)
