Hi all,

Is the 40D known for its poor noise handling by any chance.

I took a few of a sunrise coming through autumn mist so there was massive orangy misty glow. Forgot to change the iso from either 800 or 500 (cant remember which).

When it came to processing they seemed quite noisy. Is there any noise setting in the camera ? or is it just the way it is a iso 500?

Greg

I have shot ISO 3200 with good results and often shoot gig photography at 1600 and have been happy with the results. Its not perfect but i have seen ALOT worse!

40D is very good for noise levels.

Did you shoot raw and open the files in ACR/Bridge by any chance? The default setting for ACR is to run an Auto correct and if the shot is under-exposed it will correct it but add a lot of noise in the process which often catches people out.

Cheers guys,

yep Raw but always use lightroom.

However, I was shooting directly into a low sun and which put the trees inot an orange silhouette....

perhaps imexpecting miracles as the actual area magnified in lightroom by the noise reduction sliders is tiny so perhaps the noise looks more visible than it really is.
So perhaps im worring too much

The dangers of pixel peeping

I do it myself, it's even worse looking at a file that's been output for print sharpening. At 100% it can look very iffy but the prints look great

I think noise is irrelevant on most pictures viewed at 100% on screen

I've printed stuff out A4+ at ISO 1600 and ISO 2000 with no problems, yet at 100% on screen its very noticable.

Try printing it out and you may be supprised.
