I've just bought a 40D and have a couple of questions.

1. What ISO can I go upto before noise becomes a problem?

2. I notice it has an auto ISO function. Is this fairly reliable or should I stick with setting it myself?

TIA.

1. i would test the high iso out yourself tonight, i am happy with iso 800 but not been above that, i have seen some pics of 1600 and they dont look noisy at all.

i havent really used the auto iso function, but keep meaning to try it.

To be honest, I shoot up to 1600 with it. The noise is very easily removable really and even at 1600 it's noticeable but not awful. There is a function that allows "H" ISO which is, I think, 3200. That is pretty bad and I avoid it unless absolutely necessary.

How long is a piece of string. When ISO becomes a problem depends on what you're trying to photograph, and what level of noise is acceptable for the image. For what it's worth, I've seen pictures shot in clubs at ISO 1600 come out looking (in my opinion) perfectly acceptable.

Agree completely.....it's not possible to quantify when it's an issue, based on ISO setting alone.

I used the auto ISO this weekend for a try and got ok results, but I prefer to be in control and set it myself. I think the auto only choses between 100 and 400 anyway.....but I might be wrong there.

Now that I am getting used to the 40D, I find I can quickly change ISO without having to look at my hands.......just look in the viewfinder......so doing it myself is not a problem.

I have shot at 1600 and the noise wasn't too bad....just a gentle tweak in noiseware was all that was needed.

As has been said, it is very relative...there are some who will "find" noise in a daylight 100ISO landscape shot...:bonk:

As I do not own any digic III camera I will rather refrain from giving an absolute opinion and putting both feet in my mouth simultaneously...

Should be good under most conditions up to about 1250 and then start to play a role...

Noise is also related to exposure. under expose and the noise will be worse than if you get it right or slightly over expose.

Which is another sage reason to take reviews with the necessary bucket of salt:thumbs:

Auto ISO isn't much use on the 40D in my opinion.

Try it and point it to the sky. It should read ISO100 but instead it goes down to ISO400 or 320 at best and with a very fast shutter speed. Just doesn't make much sense, it seems to be very cautious with the shutter speeds.

Good thing I am NOT working in gimmick development...:bonk:

Why is it that we spend so much on fancy cameras to have all the control and then spend even more to get all the dummy modes back??

I can see it being handy if it went down to ISO100 and maybe factored in the reciprocal shutter/focal length speed. e.g shooting 100mm requires 100ms shutter speed and the camera would bump the ISO up accordingly to maintain this speed and a good exposure.

But it doesn't.

I've noticed it like to stay around the 400 setting even if its a bright shot.

I'll stick with manual :)
