Hi all,

I currently have a 400d with 18-55IS and 75-300mm lenses.

Thinking of upgrading to 50d with 18-200 lens.

Anybody done this recently? What are you thoughts and experiences?

Cheers

Rob

The 50D is definately a good step up, but you'll be seriously limited if you dont get some decent lenses for it first!! Personally I'd invest some decent new glass for the 400D which would improve results much more than simply swapping bodies, then get the 50D at a later date.

:plusone: i agree totally, i went from a 400d to a 50d and dont regret it one bit (bank balance says different though!). But you need good glass or it will show up every flaw.

I went from the 400D to a 50D, I love the camera but as others have said, you need good quality lenses to get the best from it.

I did that exact upgrade, went from a 400d to a 50d.

But i do not think that an 18-200 is the best lens for it. The sensor on the 50d really demands quality glass (Due to the high pixel count)

just gone from a 30d to 50d, big step up from the 30d

already had the L lenses in place before so helps

would the 17-85 is be ok for this camera or would you say change it for an L lens

I had the same dilemma, and decided to get a 40D and a 70-200 instead. The 40D is a huge step up from the 400D and use the difference to get quality glass.

I had this dilemma a while back. Do you really need the higher pixel count?
I didn't have great lenses, so opted for the 40D and just recently purchased a 70-200 L IS.

Although both the 400D and the 40D are 10MP the difference in IQ is astounding (with the better lens).

I'm sure I've also read a thread on here about the differences between the 40D and 50D and most peoples opinions were that the price difference was not justified.

So my suggestion is 40D with some new glass.

^ I should imagine that the improvement in IQ is more down to upgrading to L glass than the body (from a 400D with rubbish lenses to a 40 with L glass!).

Dont get me wrong, the 40/50D's are excellent cameras, and I hopefully will be getting one at the end of this year, but there are far too many people who buy a decent beginner SLR with a kit lens and maybe a cheap zoom, get dissatisfied then think upgrading the body is the answer to amazing pics. I firmly believe in getting the best out of what you already have as TBH a 400/500D with L glass will give you almost identical results to the 40D with L glass under normal circs, which I why I'm waiting to upgrade my body. Then I can get the best out of my 40/50D when I get it without strangling it with below par glass!

I went from a 400d to a 50D and never looked back, its a great camera. I used a 17-85 IS USM on the 400 and brought that with me to the 50D, I still use it as a walk about lens and general purpose lens with good results, its a lens I wouldn’t part with on this camera. However, to get the very best out of the camera you do need good glass as has been said here many times.
Start with the 17-85 which are available quite reasonable second hand, and as the budget allows, add better lenses to your kit.

the thing with needing better glass is that you need reaally good glass to make it outperform a 40d in iq stakes with the same glass they will be similar

both are massive leaps from a 400d

Hi, I thought I'd post here instead of starting a new identical thread...

I have a 400D, but I'm looking to upgrade. I have a 24-105mm L lens, which produces some great results - I would really like the larger body of the 40D/50D though, as the 400D is a bit small, and I'd like all the extras of an upgrade too. (I love the feel/look of the 40D/50D).

Question is, which one should I go for? Nearly all the reviews of the 50D I've seen complain about noise, and the fact that the increased pixels actually produce a softer image in certain circumstances, and that the sensor might be too small for that amount of data. It feels a bit wrong to be going for a 40D when there is a later model available though, which is why I need advice form someone who has (preferably) used both!

I just want sharp sharp pics, and a new body which will complement the glass. I can afford a 50D body only, so that isn't a problem, I just don't want to get something that has problems with it from the start.

Yes, that why I want the opinion from people who use one. Am I right in thinking there would be a big difference in picture quality between a 400D and 50D, if I use the same lens? Or would the difference actually be negligible?

I am in the process of upgrading from a Bridge Pannie to my first DSLR (Paypal CC Registering issues...you have to wait to get a bill with a code on it now) and am pondering between the 50d and the 500d...the chips etc are about the same and the 500d also has movies (an extra that just saves on a video camera) the main difference is the Physics of the body size, weight & materials...I think my choice will all be down to how it feels in the hand...

There is also the £250 difference in price to consider...but either way I think I'm pretty much sold on the glass...my order of rank would be:

#1 - Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM £690
#2 - Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM £290

Save for the flash and tele as time goes on...

If I am off at a tangent here...let me know...!!! But good glass seems to be the biggest issue...after budget...

One thing to consider is that there /might/ be another XXD camera coming out very soon.

If the video is important, the new camera might have it. However, being new it will cost
If cost is important, the new camera might make costs lower.

Have a look in the 50 owners thread. A poster has put up a very good selection of images, taken at different ISOs with the 50d. Makes me drool over the 50d and wanting to get rid of this 400d soon.

Just got a 100-400L this afternoon, thanks to someone on here. And a quick test shot shows how much difference good glass can make.
This is a hand held, 1/20th s shot from the camera, measured at 8m distance, and the area of the shot is 1 inch high.
None of my other lenses come close to the resolving power of this (and by that I mean the unblurred quality)!
I was shocked when I saw that I could see this from there....

Good lenses make a world of difference!!! (I already have the 28-135 IS, 75-300 IS, both good lenses, but not of this quality!)

Edit: should say that this is a 100% crop, this part of the image is 368px x 250 px out of ~3600x2500, i.e. 1/100th of the whole image!

That looks really clear I thought IS would be required for that kind of photo...

Is there a date for the new cameras...or just rumour...?

Rough month if not...?

Just thinking...I can get an import 500d for £449 and 50d for £699...

The 50d budget with the lens would push me right out to the left fiels...so the wee extras would have to wait...
