Hi,
Don't know if anyone can help me. I have a 400d the flash was working OK the other day but now won't pop up. An error message [05] comes up on the screen saying the flash is obstructed and switch off and back on. Tried this and it still doesn't work.
Any ideas please?!

My 20D does that occasionally, I have to hook a nail under it and push it up when it's trying to release automatically.

I#m having the same prob with my 350d now and then, really p***es me off.
Was going to take camera back... its less than 2 weeks old, but if its a prob with Canon cameras that seems pointless.

If your camera is less than 2 weeks old and has a fault you really should take it back :nono:

u sure its not the way you were holding it as its only happened to me when I've had my finger over it or left the hostshoe spiritlevel in :shake:

First time I obstructed it with my finger I never realised as there was no clicking sound or vibration felt on my finger.

Apart from the above its been absolutly fine

Not got a spirit level for it.
Don't think finger got in the way, and it only seems to happen the day after a nights clubbing use 4-6hours, min 100 pics).

battery getting tired? (camera, that is - not you - although!)

Nah don't think so.. happened yesterday on a fully charged battery.

I had this problem on a 20D a while ago - sent it off to Fixation to repair under warranty. They replaced part of the flash eject mechanism (apparently a known issue) turned it around in a couple of days and even did a free sensor clean and focus calibration.

If your camera is under warranty might be worth sending it in to be checked.

I had exactly the same problem, basically the plastic front bit of the flash base/surround moves in a tiny bit (especially if you keep it facing down in a bag). This bit here:

The bit where the 'canon' bit meets with the flash gets squashed up slightly (and seems to randomly distort to a squashy position from time to time). I actually popped my flash up with a fingernail (after turning flash on on the camera and getting the '5' msg, to release the mechanism) and bent the 'canon' section forward slightly, but I wouldn't try that unless you're quite comfortable with your own strength, I wouldn't imagine it would take much to snap. I do remember reading somewhere that canon will fix it (or replace it) under warranty though.

thanks honey, just managed to pop mine up. Will leave it out of bag as much as poss too.

Mmmmmm just popped mine up too. It will pop up with a little persuasion but not happy about using the bend it method!

I have the same problem with my 5D. Haven't been able to release the internal flash so had to buy an external flash :D

I had that but Petemc linked me to a tutorial how to loosen your hotshoe and it pops up then.
