Hi All

I have my first indoor dance to cover and need advice on settings and equipment to use.The dance is an inter-school event that covers the country,so would like to make an impression.I have a Canon 400D camera,a nifty-fifty,28-135mm IS,and 75-300mm zoom {not IS**.I am currently waiting for the nifty fifty to arrive as i have read it's good for indoor shooting so bought one online,Thanks :)

P.S.
I have heard the event is going to be professional and well lit, whatever that means.

While the 50 f/1.8 is good for indoor shooting by virtue of the fact that it's wicked fast, I should remind you that the focusing mechanism is very slow and not very accurate. Depending on how well your surroundings are lit, you might have trouble focusing accurately (especially at f/1.8!).

Although I've never tried the 28-135 IS, it looks like it'll be too slow for indoor(?).

One thing you'll probably need is a flash. While the on-camera flash will work with the 50 f/1.8 (it won't work so well with larger lenses), it'd be better if you had a more powerful flash (like a 420EX or a 430EX).

Good luck! Indoor events can be tough, depending how they're lit.

THE 50mm work great, but the only drawback will be the length. i would guess something like a 70-200f2.8 would be ideal, so that you can get some good candids, without people being too aware your taking pics of them. if the lighting is that good, you would get away with higher f stop, perhaps 4 etc. you can hire the 70-200 from stewartR on www.lensesforhire.co.uk, i think it was bout £70 for a week.

StewartR may not ship to NZ.

It all depends on the venue really. Big hall and the longer lens may be useful, small hall and the opposite is true. Unless its really well lit you'll be at iso800+ as your lenses aren't fast enough (except 50mm 1.8)

i didnt even look where he was! oops, no i doubt he would send it that far, a scout mission would be an idea beforehand to see what you got to work with. take the camera and try a couple of shots and see if the lenses are up to it.

We don't have any lens hire places in the south island, that i'm aware of.So if you have some spare cash and looking at moving to N.Z. that would be a good business to set up :D
