Hello everyone!

My second post since I joined today. I was trying now for a while to get some answers on other forum if those old lenses of mine from old film cameras are compatible with DSLR cameras but nobody answered so far.
I was hoping since this is forum specifically made for photo enthusiasts that you might know and tell me with which have Fuji S6500FD and while I was very satisfied with it I've outgrown it and I have learned few tricks with cameras I realised I am in a need for something more serious. I love to go to the airshows and to take all sorts of photos.
Now I am ready for next step. Nice and affordable DSLR something like Olympus E-510.
To avoid buying very expensive lenses I was wondering if I could use any of those and if yes with which particular camera? I welcome any comments.
Thank you.

I'd avoid the olympus bodies, the lenses are either starter lenses like the kit ones or very expensive pro lenses.

almost every lens ever made for Nikon will work on a Nikon DSLR so there are some bargains out there as long as you don't want the latest spec

as for the pictures, You'd need to identify the mount before you'd know if they were suitable

It would be more helpful if you posted some photos of the front element writings and from whatever it's written on the side, or just write it down for us. The only one I've recognised is the fifth one. That is a Canon FD lens, not compatible with Canon Digital Cameras (or the latest EOS range of film cameras either) but can use with an EF to FD converter but with manual focus only. The last one looks interesting too, an 135mm f/2.8 lens, that would be great for portraits and short telephoto, would be nice for airshows, if only a litle short. What make is that one?

Again, post more details on what it's written on the lenses instead of general photos of them!

Well, first of all thank you for remarkably quick response. You have to make it as simple for me as possible I am afraid in order to understand any jargon.

I took 2 more photos of that camera with lens of so if that means something to you and makes it more easier to see perhaps.

Ok, here we go.

1. Canon lens, made in Japan, FD 28mm 1: 2.8

2. Elicar automatic 1: 2.8 1=135mm No.733205 55ǿ

3. Domiplan 2.8/50 Meyer-Optik Gorlitz

4. Super OZECK II Auto zoom MC 1:4.5 f=75-200mm No.K8301868 52ǿ

Hope this clarifies it. Thank you in advance friends.

Unfortunately, none of the above lenses can be used on any digital SLR cameras without any converter. All of them will be manual focus lenses, which means that you can't autofocus with them, a feature very practical for every situation.

No 1 and 4 (not 100% sure about 4 though) can be used on Canon FD mount. This mount is the old Canon mount, before Canon changed its technology, turning to the autofocus EF mount (26 years ago). You can get an FD to EF converter for about £25 but I don't think that would be the best approach.
The Domiplan and the Elicar are also manual focus lenses, used on Praktica cameras.

I think, the best approach would be, if there is no sentimental value to these lenses and the camera, to sell them. I think you would get about £150 for the whole lot (average £30 for each lens).

You were going to buy a digital SLR anyhow, so, you can use this money to invest in a second lens, a must considering the lenses coming with the cameras as a kit these days.

As for brand, well, since you are not using any of these lenses, you are free to choose whatever you want, I can't give you any advice there because, as you will come to know, there are two main camps in the photographic world, the Canon camp and the Nikon camp. There is much brand loyalty and everyone will point out the merits of the system they chose.

I'll just say that you will be thrilled with whatever you choose. Both companies offer a great range of cameras and lenses (there are other companies too, I know).

you can get a good auto-focus lens for a DSLR without spending much money, the 50mm f/1.8 for about £50, beit Nikon or Canon. Next up a host of zooms for about £150, then 85mm f/1.8 for about £190, then the sky is the limit.

BTW I have a 6500FD. The biggest differences you will notice, the optical view finder on an SLR is so much better, and secondly the control over the depth of field because the sensor is so much bigger.

Hope that helps.

Guys, thank you for an answers. Stylgeo, you'll be surprised to hear that after long search a lots of research I set my eyes on Olympus E-510. Price/features/quality in it's class is apparently unmatched in comparison to Nikon D40X, Canon 400D etc..
That's what many People recommended as well as some reputable sites.

:) why would I be surprised? That's a brilliant camera, a friend of mine has it and it's great! I was just preparing you for whatever you might hear or read about Canon and Nikon!
I hope you enjoy your purchase. Keep us posted!
