My Sigma EX 12-24mm DG HSM is in for a repair (if economical). Whilst photographing a MTB Downhil Event the lens was impacted by high velocity mud off the back wheel of a Rider. I carefully cleaned the mud off but found the lens damaged / scratched. Before anyone suggests filter this Sigma Lens uses rear gel filters.

Whilst my lens is being looked at and to assist me with my decision whether or not to have the lens repaired, I would welcome fellow Canon users suggestions for alternatives. To help - ideally I require a ultra wide angled zoom similar to the tokina 10-17mm which is compatible with my EOS 3 and EOS 1D mkII N's. I would also consider a prime 8mm / 10mm /12mm lens.

Any suggestions ?

Use a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM myself, its an ultrawide, but it is designed for digital so although it will work with EOS 3 you may find you get alot of vignetting, with the 1D MKIIn being a crop sensor you shouldnt have any problems there.

Heres some examples of what the lens can do.

And heres some reviews.

Alas, it's only a part crop so the 10-20 isn't really an option if you want decent edge to edge coverage.

If you do find a better alternative to the 12-24 I'd love to hear about it too. I find it passable but for very wide stuff as the detial can often be sacraficed a little for the coverage. Compared to the canon 17-40 at an equivalent length though the difference is quite scary.
