Just a quick question, sorry if it has been asked before.

Is there any difference between the 3rd party version of a hood and the Canon ones? I assume the 3rd party is the same size etc, maybe cheaper plastic?

Genuine = £30, 3rd party - £6, so I'm wondering why I should pay the extra? Feels odd using my 17-55 2.8 without a hood as my Sigma before it had one.
 
It depends. Some of them are thinner plastic, some don't attach as well as the OEM gear. But some are fine.
 
Thanks guys, can anyone recomend a good 3rd party one? Need a EW-83J (for Canon).
 
I've seen various third party ones including the one your after on ebay, some of which state they have the black flock lining referred to by Mike above, and some which state a matt finish? (not sure if thats the same as the felt lining or a matt paint finish, maybe worth emailing the seller!).
 
Something to check with aftermarket hoods is that they have a matt finish inside.
 
I used one from HKBNS on fleabay on my 10-22 Ef-s.

It was a good fit and although only had matt finish it never caused me problems. Cost me about the £6 mark :D
