Yep you can probably guess by the heading - the new camera arrived today - quick service from PC World off the web :) - Ordered Saturday - arrived today on normal free postage.

It came with the kit lens so i best get out and find out what this big button does.

The hardest first thing was how do I fit a lens - the fuji one doesn't come off :D

Go on then Canon users whats the best tip you can give me.... For my own I think its definately read the instruction manual

Well assuming it's similar in use to my 30d, don't hesitate to crank up the shutter speed in low light conditions - I regularly shoot at speedway with the camera shouting at me that it's too underexposed and still manage to claw back the results in PhotoShop later!

Glad it's arrived anyway - as you say a good read of the manual will sort out the bulk of the stuff you're not sure of - looking forward to seeing some of the results!

My tips would be

1, change the focus point selection from auto to center and manual selection of the other points.

2, Save P mode and full auto for when you are in a hurry or want to hand the camera to someone else to use. I shoot mostly in Av (you choose the aperture camera chooses shutter speed) and M(anual). And don't even think of using all those pre defined style mode nonsenses.

3, Don't expect too much too soon. Expect worse pictures before they get better.

Did you get a good deal if you got it from PC world, can't imagine them being the cheapest?

Just go out and shoot pictures - it'll all fall into place.

regards

Set all the in camera sharpening, saturation, etc settings to zero if you are going to shoot RAW.

Congrats and have fun.

Take your time composing your shots. With an SLR you have an enormous advantage in that what you see in the viewfinder really is what you get. You're virtually looking at your finished shot. :)

Yay! No one said it

Best tip?

Custom Function 04..Set it to 1 :D
Takes a while to get used to, but you'll never go back :)
(The * button on the back becomes the focus button, and the half press of the shutter becomes the exposure lock).

Congrats on a cracking purchase, you know you wont' regret it. The 350D is a fine camera, hence why I bought (and still own) one..My first SLR too (well, digital SLR).

Why is it that every time I see this mentioned I think, " I must do that, it makes so much sense" and yet still haven't. :cuckoo:

I supose I just don't really want to go through losing a load of shots while I adjust but I must give it a go.

I've never held the 350 so I don't know it at all but we've all seen how well it produces the goods.

Congratulations KIM ... it is great getting a new toy ain't it ? Don't matter how old you git it will always remain a thrill !

Enjoy immensely as I am sure you will ! ;)

Not being a Canon user I cannot offer any direct tips for your toy but there are loadsa useful tips in the TotD thread ... as I am sure you already know !

Best one of all is to use it, use it and use it all over again ... you'll soon get used to it and the way to use it to get what you want best out of it ! :p

What will come harder will be parting with your hard earned for all the new kit you will 'need' !

Use AV or TV modes.
Set it up for centre spot focusing
Set it up for continuos firing just in case you need it, but you can still shoot single shots.
Keep the book of words handy.
Just get out there and play you'll soon learn what's what.

Have fun and enjoy your new toy.

A reconmendation for your next spending buy the battery grip and a spare battery you won't regret it.

I second that, make your next purchase a battery grip. It gives the camera a better feel and more balance.

 Definately.

I also agree with the battery grip recommendations. It really does make the camera feel that little bit comfier.

Another vote here for this, it actually didn't take me that long to get used to it... but the sooner you do it the better IMHO :)
