This week the challenge is...

Playing

I've tried to pick a theme that's broad enough for anyone to have a go at - indoors / outdoors, as simple or complex as you like.
So come on people, give it a try. We need to get the numbers back up for this competition

Any interpretation that you like - and I can think of loads.
Playing sport, playing music, playing games, just to name some of the obvious ones. (cough) But let's keep it clean and safe for work ;)

Usual rules apply:

All entries must be new photos, taken within the timeframe of the comp.
Maximum of 3 entries per person.
Limited PP, cropping, exposure control, sharpening etc is okay, multi layered cut and pasting is not.
The winner chooses the theme for the following challenge.

Entries can be posted from 8pm on Thursday 27th August until 8pm on Sunday 30th August, with the winner announced later that evening.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the entries.
Good luck everyone and have fun! :)

New here and my first entry!

This is a hurdy-gurdy and if you look closely you can see some of the strings vibrating (they show up better in the full size original). Taken with bounced flash.

What I really would like is to get it so that the cranking hand is also partly blurred, but I am not entirely sure how to do that and in any case neither I nor my 'victim' have the time at the moment to set it up. One day I'll have another go, though.

Grown men playing with Kites.

These were taken at the Portsmouth Kite festival today.

Didn't manage to get as many as i would like. A Dutch guy who goes all over Europe flying his kites, collapsed with what i think was a massive heart attack. Gave him CPR but the poor bloke was dead and wasn't coming back.:(
Did my head in a bit.
Hopefully he would approve of these.

Slower shutter speed will let you get the cranking hand showing blur/movement.

O/T - how do you play one of those? are those keys up the side of the strings? Is it a sort of stringed accordian (frightening thought).

Oh - Welcome to TP!

What I want to try is a combination of slow shutter speed and rear-curtain flash sync, so that the hand is sharp but leaves a trail. Or even better use the same technique with the wheel guard off (like below) to show the motion of the wheel.

It is more a cross between a mechanical violin and a bagpipe..... Turning the wheel makes the strings vibrate, and the ones at the top and bottom of the picture are drones. The middle strings are for playing the tune - pressing the keys stops the string at the right place, like a violinist's finger.

You don't normally use all the strings at once -- these instruments were designed to play for dancing outdoors and can be pretty penetrating! Great fun but you need to be careful with the neighbours :D

Good to be here - I can see I will learn a lot.

Took a few shots at a cricket match I stopped to watch briefly.

And one from the Mewla Rally today on the Epynt, boys playing with toys.

It's that time of the week again!!!!
Well done to everyone who entered.

OK in descending order :

In third place I've chosen this one from Merc. Really nice framing of the dragon? kite. I would just have liked to see it with a slightly less cluttered background.

Second place to Tracer's hurdygurdy. I like the capture of the strings and nice sharp image. Good luck with perfecting this and getting the shot that you want with the hand.

And finally first place goes to Comfy.
I like the interpretation of boys' toys :D and this is a very nice shot. I'm impressed that you managed to catch something moving at that speed ;)

So over to you Comfy for next week.

Oooh :) Thank you very much for the first place, I liked the other entries, especially the wonderful kites.
I've just gone back to count how many shots I took today of the rally, over 350, most of which were blurred hehe. I took a few in 'sport' mode (high speed shutter etc.) but wheres the fun in that. I was right at the end of a stage and the cars were really powering down the hill, probably not the best place to start practising blurry pan shots.

I'll get the next competition up and running in about an hour after I've had a think about a topic.

Well done Comfy! A worthy winner!

It was hard to keep the clutter out of the photo as it was everywhere. I was moaning to myself all the time about it.:(
