Ve been searching eBay and have found both of these with everything I need (minus the lens) for about 130ish which (in your opinions) is the better camera?

Of these 2, I've had (still got) the 300D and it's a great camera, so my vote goes to this one. Nikon fans will probably go for the D50.

Have you had a try with either manufacturer to see which menu system / button layout etc suits you best ???

You could pick up a 350D for around the £130. Check out mifsuds, ffordes, camtech, park camera's, MPB photographic, all good rep used dealers for camera gear and for me personally abit safer than eBay. £130 for a 300D sounds abit on the expensive side
 
One thing that the 300D has going for it over earlier cameras is that it's the first model to be able to use EF-S lenses. That may give an advantage over the more robustly built 10D that might be found for about the £130 mark.

Most of those are base only and cheapest is over £200. The ones on eBay have lens battery and charger, usually more aswel!

Not really was thinking About popping into Jessops today for a play with both. Is that cheeky? Haha

You would be hard-pressed to find either camera in Jessops, don't think they do used camera's anymore, both camera's have been superseded by several later models, you might find them in a London Camera, but only the larger stores that have a used section.

Canon 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D, 500D, 550D, 600D (current)
nikon D70, D70(s), D50, D80, D40, D40x, D90, D60, D3000, D5000, (D3100, D5100 current versions)

The 300D like the 550D or 600D where as the D50 (cut down version of the D70(s) and is similar in size to the D3100

Yeah I know but I assume the feel and basic controls will be very similar? So a good feel for Nikon or canon could be a defining factor.

Yes absolutely, with regards to the 300D, the 550/600 is probably closest in term of ergonomics.
 
What about a 20D/30D. If you arent in a rush.
 
As a long time Canon user, I'd have to say get the Nikon D50. It will offer quicker operation, better image quality and better resale value when you come to upgrade.

I can still remember my 300D as one of the worst cameras I've had, slooooow to use, and very poor high ISO.

If you can go through back issues of mags like Amateur Photographer you would see the D50 was normally compared to the 350D, not the 300D.
 
i agree , although saying that ive got a 300D as well and thats still going (they were built much more like the 20D only with a plastic body , than the smaller 350, 400 etc ) - but 130 for a 300D is seriously over priced - last time I looked mpb had a 300D for 69 quid

I ve just bought a second 20D with a grip and a bunch of batteries for £150 out of the classifieds on here
 
If you put the right lens on the front, the 20D still a great camera

Imo its more to do with the ability of the photographer - but i broadly agree

a gifted tog with a 20D or 300D and cheap glass will still get a better picture than a muppet with a 1D4 and an L series lens

I actually only just bought a D50 after selling my old one ages ago and missing it. Great camera, and has the advantage of being the smallest camera that can autofocus the old motor driven Nikon lenses.

Paired with a 70-210mm D lens, autofocus is as fast and accurate as anything I've seen.

Picture quality is great as long as you're not making huge prints. Also, the LCD at the top is a game-changer for me :).
 
yeah lol i know - that was on skokholm on about day 5 or a 7 day trip with no mains power and only limited batteries - so regular sensor cleaning wasnt really an option (this was before i got the arctic butterfly)

Ive subsequently cloned out the worst on the high res version (and also the annoying brown grass blade from bottom centre) - but i did that after uploading the one you see here

His eye isnt absolutely sharp either - I think the focus point was on the beak - and thats another benefit of a 20D over the 300D more selectable focus points and better foccusing

I don't think that not being absolutely sharp detracts too much, the way the bird is wadling on one leg makes the shot for me.

This pic wound up full page in a magazine article about tourism opportunities in wales back in '07 ... which goes to show that its not about what kit you've got , but what you make of it
 
Why the **** would anyone want to buy a 300D?! :shrug: :thinking:

Been looking at a few 350d's and thy go for about £130 no cracks, with battery charger sometimes a memory card and a lens.

Where could I get a decent lens for £20 though?
 
They go for over £170 and to buy with a lens from the recommended site from above is over £175!!

20D = 94 quid, 18-55is = 69 total £163 and thats with the IS version of the lens , MPB dont have any non IS versions in at the moment but when they do they are usually 44 quid for a total of £138

(if you want a less scuffed body they usually sell 20Ds at £135 body only)

Anyway the point is that although the 300D isnt a bad camera it is quite dated (for example it has selection buttons on the back not a scroll wheel which makes a big difference to ergonomics an useability) , and the 20D is a who another step beyond in terms of durability and performance (alloy body, scroll wheel, better processer, better focus, *MP rather than 6mp, 5fps instead of 3 ) so even if its another 30 or 40 quid you are getting a lot of camera forr your money.

That said it depends on how much of a hurry you are in as there could also be something to be said for saving your pennies for another few months and getting a 40D or 450D both of which tend to be a tad under the 300 quid mark body only - and both of which are another step beyond the 20d

One photo to give you an idea of the quality of the 6mp Nikon D50.
I have a D300 and a D3 but will not sell my D50. I still use it when I want to travel light.
I handles ISO up to 1600 pretty well also.
A good buy at the price you mentioned.
 
The ISO100 on the 300D is bliss, so so so so so smooth
 
I'm canon guy. but I think that the nikon D50 is better . but to be honest - all of the old cameras are way overpriced usually . It is very, very hard to get one for a decent price. 150 is not decent. 75 would be . I bought and sold a very used 20d canon for 90 pounds a year ago. it's a superb camera. but to this day very rarely have seen such price for it.

Yeah I couldn't figure out why they were so high? What price would I be looking at for a half decent (but still cheap) new body? And what would people recommend for a new starter body? I might buy new and put the lens on hold until next payday

Image stabiliser (on canon lenses)

and re your other post the iso is the digital equivalent of film speed (aka ASA) - it basically controls sensor sensistivity so you'd turn it up in low light and down in bright light

On the point about it being soo so smooth on the 300D, ISO 100 ought to be smooth on all cameras and i've not seen any appreciable difference between the 300D and the 20D - the ISO issue is usually about how much noise (ie random cloured pixels) there is at high isos - modern cameras being a lot better at handling these than older ones
 
For something like a 550D or 600D new you are looking at about 400 quid - a 60D will be about 650 notes and a 7D about a grand

90 odd quid for a 20D isnt expensive (mine was 750 quid new about 8 years ago)

D50 better than the 300D, yes I would probably agree, better than the 20D no, it was a cut down version of the D70s, and I would recommend that ahead of the D50.
