Overnight ... someone seems to have snook in a nasty addition to the searching facility ... :suspect:

We have appear to have had applied a 100% inflation rate to the "This forum requires you to wait 15 seconds between searches" ... :shrug:

It is now 30 SECONDS ... :eek:

I noticed the server was slow over the weekend, perhaps this is their way to "load balance" :shrug:
 
I was tinkering last night...Is 30 seconds too long?
I think we've outgrown our current hosting (again :D), so while we're looking at bigger and better servers, I was just looking for minimal ways to reduce the load, to keep the site snappy.

If you want it can always be turned back down again ;)
 
Nah ... probably only me anyway ... :shrug: ... just that I seem to hit the 15 sec barrier quite regularly late at night ... :suspect:

30 secs might be a pain to live with ... but then it might slow me down a bit ... or make me retire earlier ... :D

I'll go with the flow ... just a bit of a surprise when it happened this morning ... ;)

Yeah, I get hit by the 15 second one alot to, but then Im a sad no lifer - whats your excuse Ven ;)

Dont mind the 30 second rule myself if it eases the current pressure on the site :thumbs:

Im thinking aloud a bit here Marcel but, another site I belong to that Ive watched grow from a measly few members to over 13,000 has gone through more servers than hot dinners, as the site grew it became totally impossible for the guy to fund the site himself as it was costing him more to fund it than his car payments. a
A new facility was added, called 'Premier Status', which basically means you can store more/write longer PM's and your gallery holds a few more pics.
Nothing fancy really but I pay £25 per year to be a Prem along with many others to assist in funding the site. However, even with this added facility, these last few months hes had to give in to banner ads, something he desparately didnt want to do but, the good thing is the Premmies can turn them off! :D
Prem type thing might be an idea to look into, if the site becomes too much of a burden on pockets... as I say though, just thinking aloud really.
 
£25 a year sounds a bit much, even though it isn't really - try £15 and see what happens...
 
Be interesting to see how our Admin team respond to that Glo ... & Rob ... :D

As long as it isn't likely to put others off ... can happen when so-called 'tier' systems are introduced ... :shrug:

Although I have no objection ... in principle ... to contributing to this site ... it is difficult to find a decent balance that upsets no-one ... ;)

I believe we have a great balance at the moment but ... that's only mo ... right ... :D

Rob, on the site I use they have a tiered thing ... you can pay a few quid for a couple months... more for 6 months and then £25 for the whole year.
But I agree, not many peeps would grumble at £15.

The beauty of it is no-one has to pay the site is still free for anyone to use but 'Premmies' get more facillities ... includng the option to turn off the 'wait for x-amount of seconds between posts' ;)
 
£25? - Regular attendance at your local camera club would cost that each month! But if you are on several forums I suppose it starts to mount up

I do not know the costs involved but appreciate that there are some and they need addressing. Before we go down the "premiere" route; which I don't like btw (but not because I am a tight Scot;)) maybe there are other options that can be utilised. I would not mind for instance, certain advertising on each board or even a "click-through" ad to get to respond/post. TPF could become an "associate" with companies like Amazon and earn money as we spend with no cost to us.

These are just some quick suggestions, but may be we are ahead of the game. Lets hear from the head heedjuns!
 
OK I did not say why I did not like the premiere route. Simply because it is a barrier to new blood which every forum needs.
 
We have discussed some sort of recognition of voluntary contributions in the form of a badge or summat under user names, but so far we've rejected the idea as we don't want to create a two tier society here which I've seen cause problems and resentment on other forums.

We're growing quite rapidly now, but I'm sure I speak for all the staff when I say that membership subscriptions is the last route we want to take. :)

I recall that also - was usually photog based adverts like photo agencies, suppliers, etc.

LOL We did Rog, but people were deliberately clicking round the links without spending any real time on the sites and Google pulled the plug on us. :D
 
I cant really understand why peeps arent keen on the Prem suggestion, its not obligatory and has caused no probs to the other site I use.

I dont mind banner ads at the top pf pages but Id hate to see threads littered with intermittent ads between posts as Ive seen elsewhere and hate it so much I havent gone back.

However, as the site grows something will have to be done to ease the burden on the lads running the forum.
Hope somebody comes up with a solution that doesnt deter from the site as it stands!


EDIT: Solution found .... Marcel & DF to auction their bods to the highest bidder !
Ill be happy to start with 5p but go steady peeps ... my maximum bid is £5! :lol:

its not easy to balance forum needs with the ideal wishes of admin and the needs of the members, we dont want pop-ups and banners everywhere, and we dont want to have a 2 tier membership system, but we do want the site to run smoothly and have a good spped. We are getting over 6 millions hits a month, which is heavy browsing traffic, and our member signup/post rates are very high also, unique visitors per day/month are also very impressive seeing as your friendly admin team havent a clue what we are doing!

We will continue to explore 'transparent' funding such as merchandise and bod selling his nuddy pics, and keep everyone up to date on whats happening

Your thoughts and suggestions are more than welcome though!

So I reckon it should go like this.... next summer, Arkady rounds up the admins and us TPF girlies all pay a fee for a session entitled MOD BODS!!!
Of course pictures will be posted later the session for those too tight (or too sane) to attend :lol:

Matty, I hope you come up with a satisfactory solution.
It must be a double edged sword watching 'your baby' grow with pride while feeling the burden of its popularity at the same time.
Im sure no matter how much I whinge and moan at the changes (and I will) Ill still be here no matter what you have to do to make things work!:)

You think you've got a raw deal?

I used to post on a forum where they introduced a 20 MINUTE delay between posts, in an attempt to reduce the amount of spam.

I didn't stick around long enough to find out if it worked.

Anyway the jist of it was..I love you all, and thankyou for all your kind words and comments.
We always said we wanted TP to be a free resource to all, which is why we were so reluctant to implement the donations system at first.

The problem we face is that any avenue we take has to be first and foremost acceptable to the site users, and as a user myself I'd rather sell my children than have anything like popups or popunders, or very intrusive advertising.

The avenues we are thinking of are clickable ads for the non-logged in (ie once you log in, they disappear), or maybe sponsored logos at the top or very bottom of the forum (eg opposite the TP logo).
Also maybe joining a few affiliate schemes so we earn via clickthroughs from the forums.

What I personally wouldn't like to see is ads breaking up threads and posts etc, and also any that become intrusive to you lot, so don't worry about that. Any avenue we take, we're always going to listen to the members and make sure it's all acceptable.
We don't mind paying for as much as we can out of our own pocket. We do this for the love of providing a community for others to relax and chat in. That's why it gives us immense pride when people give us a compliment about how nice it is here, or how friendly....It makes it extra specially nice, because we do it FOR you, not as an extension to an ego or anything.
Like I say though, we don't mind paying for it ourselves where we can, but as we grow, that cost can easily become quite restrictive (anyone remember what ocuk is claimed to cost out of the owners pocket? ;)..lol), and for that reason, we would be stupid to become 'martyrs' and say "Nope...no other means of funding except our own pockets". We're proud...but we're not stupid ...lol

and THAT, Marcel is why (and I think I can speak for many in saying this) we wouldn't mind dipping into our own pockets to keep this place the fantastic place it is. You guys do so much to give us this great forum and I for one would have no problem with being asked to chip in to keep it in it's current format
