Well, having waved goodbye to my 5D about 11 yesterday morning, my bargain used 1D Mk II arrived about an hour later (prices do seem to be softening now).

The aim is to have 2 identical cameras with identical settings. One with the 70-200 on and one with the 500. Think that is about the perfect safari setup for the budget.

I hadn't realised before, but it is so easy to synchronise settings between the cameras. Save the Custom and Personal Functions from one onto a CF card and load them onto the other camera. Brilliant.

Looking forward to trying out the approach in the UK before heading back to Kenya in September...

Makes sense to me. You don't really see the benefit of the full frame sensor with most wildlife stuff so I think you made a sensible choice.

Lucky git, one 1d mk2 would do me for now combined with the 30d lol

I agree i am looking to do the same offload my 5D and get another 1D MkII.

Also a good idea not to change lenses in Kenya as the dust is unbelievable.

Kenya's easy compared to my camera trip to the Kalahari 2 years back. I've decided not to worry too much about dust, always adding and removing teleconverters and then clean the cameras properly when I get home.

Was on the Masai Mara in January and it was so wet, there was no dust to be seen anywhere!
