Im wondering wether to get my first DSLR and ive been looking at the canon 400D. I have managed to borrow a Nikon D70 and have been playing around with it. Now I can get a used one for a little less than the canon, but im not sure which is a better camera.

Thanks in advance

go for the one thats most comfortable to hold (which is probably the d70 :) )

as above its also true that the d70 feels much more solid in your hand, only other consideration really would be whether either has any specific feature that you absolutley MUST HAVE - off the top of my head though cant imagine what either has thats to much better than the other

The 400D is a nice camera. I always favour Canons for some unexplainable reason. Having said that, I've never used a Nikkon D70 and I'm not a photography expert... so what do I know! :)

As a canon user I know that the 400 does make very nice images and is a good camera.

I don't really know the D70 but it's a little way up the nikon range isn't it, as opposed to the 400 being more aimed at entry level. If so, it's got to be worth it just for the better build even if they spec the same.

If you're into or think you're going to be into flash photography then the D70 is a winner due to it's electronic shutter design means it can sync faster than any other camera out there (probbly doesn't mean much to you right now but may come in handy later on).

It cant be as simple as which feels better in the hand.

One is only 6mp and the other 10mp for a start.

Megapixels aren't a huge decision factor for DSLR's - 'feel' is more important. Provided it's in good nick, I would err towards the D70, as you'll be getting more bang for your buck - but try and play with both to see which suits your hands best.

Thanks, I had a good play with a D70 and a very quick look at the 400D, It seems that the canon has more functions though, plus the cleaning system etc. But the standard 18-55 canon lens seems a bit rubbish.
Im really finding it hard to decide.

I have a D70 as my back up and it is a hugely capable camera, although is a little old now. That said it doesn't dimish it's ability to capture great photos. It is a very well made and solid camera.

Never used a 400D but they do get very good reviews. Personally I would find the small size an issue but that won't bother everyone.

When I was looking for my first DSLR I had my heart set on a Canon.
I found a 2nd hand 300D but it didn't "feel" right.
I then tried a new 400D, I had the same issue.
So I tried a Nikon D40, and straight away I knew that it was the one.
I don't know why, it just "felt" right.
Seriously have a good play with them both and see how you feel.

When I got my first (and so far only) DSLR last year, I wasn't sure whether to go for Canon (350D) or Nikon (D50 or D70). I found that going into a shop and trying them all out was very helpful. I found the Canon fitted my hands much better, and I found the Canon control layout and menu layout more intuitive. (Of course, others may reach exactly the opposite conclusions.) I figured that having a camera which I could basically get along with very easily would be worth more than having this feature or that feature.
