Popped into town today and saw a Canon fit Sigma 70-300mm lens for sale, used for £80.

From the Sigma site:

70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO

Telephoto zoom lenses with tele-macro function, optimized for digital cameras.

The high performance telephoto zoom lens is ideal for digital SLR cameras. This lens has two SLD glass elements in the front lens group and one in the rear lens group It is able to shoot with maximum magnification 1:2 at the focal length of 300 mm. It’s the ideal lens for portraits, sports photography, nature photography, and other types of photography that frequently use the telephoto range.

New coating reduces Ghost and Flare.

The new multi layer lens coating and lens design reduce flare and ghost, which is a common problem with digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance through the entire zoom range.

It is equipped with three pieces of SLD glass for high image quality

This lens has two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements in the front lens group and one in the rear lens group, the lens has excellent correction of chromatic aberration through the entire zoom range.

Macro shooting with maximum magnification 1:2

High optical performance is demonstrated throughout the entire zoom range. It also has a switch that converts the lens to macro photography at focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm with a minimum focusing distance of 95cm (37.4 inches). In normal mode the minimum focusing distance is 150cm (59.1 inches) at all zoom settings. Maximum magnification between 200mm and 300mm is 1:2.9 to 1:2.

Worth a punt at £80?

Seems like a pretty good price provided it's in good condition.
Just checked ebay and these go for around £70 - £130.
And a friend of mine has one of these and likes it a lot. Worth a punt I'd say.

A lot of people will say this lens is utter cack and you shouldn't touch it with a barge pole but I beg to differ! Hand held with a 2x teleconverter at ISO3200 :)

Wow. I went back to buy it after getting the 'OK' from the Boss and the bloody thing was gone. Oh well. I may look around to see what else I can get-any recommendations?

I used to have one and it's only down side for me was the AF speed and to a much lesser extent the noise from the motor. But otherwise a great bit of glass for the price.

skyblueads, be VERY careful if you do purchase a Sigma 70-300. Firstly make sure its the DG APO version. Secondly, the older versions of the lens were ONLY compatible with Film EOS cameras and will not function on Digital EOS versions.

Happy hunting, Ads

If you know anyone in Jessops they have a christmas bonus in the form of a Tamron version (which is near enough the same optically as the Sigma) for £50... if you don't know anyone from Jessops, then make friends with one quick!

Otherwise, keep an eye out here, LCE although they can be pretty costly, ebay can yield some bargains - but I've only bought/bidded on items that I can collect in person so I can check it before handing over cash. But other than that I can't really help!

Sounds almost too cheap for a shop price for the APO Sigma but about right for the non-APO one. The APO one is certainly worth a punt especially at that price but the non-APO one probably isn't.
