Just wondering if any TP'ers are using a 28-70 on a Canon crop and for what type of images.

The background to my question is probably a bit of Bank Holiday GAS but my current lens line up is
10-22, 17-50, 70-200, 90 macro and 400 with a 7D ii

These are used to cover a diverse range of topics but primarily nature, aviation, garden photography with a bit of landscape.

I am considering switching the 17-50 for a 28-70 as on paper this gives me almost continuous coverage but wondered if I might be changing lenses more frequently

With the imminent end of summer I am thinking of trying out portraits but will probably pick up a cheap nifty fifty to see if I enjoy it

Any input appreciated

That depends how many pictures you take in the 17-28mm range and whether you tend to take longer focal length shots or shorter in the same session.

If you can the 17-50 in favour of the 28-70 you'll also lose the 22-28 range...

Waaaaay back when APS-C DSLR's were a new thing and I knew nothing about APS-C or crop factors (there were no FF digital cameras then) I bought a Canon 300D and a Sigma 28-300mm lens and I couldn't understand why 28mm wasn't wide anymore and instead seemed like a "standard" lens and of course that's what it was as on APS-C 28mm looks like 45mm on FF.

If you're happy with a zoom starting at 45mm FF equiv FoV then go for it but personally I think a 28-70mm is an odd choice for APS-C even allowing for the fact that you think it fills the focal length line up better. I think something starting at 17 or 18mm makes a lot more sense.

I would have a look in Lightroom and see how often you shoot in the 22-28 (35-44 equivalent). Personally I find that a much more useful focal range than 50-70 (80-112 equivalent), and that's the trade you're making.

Although not too relevant here it's worth remembering that each mm at the wider end is has a much larger impact on the field of view, so extra focal length on wide lenses is more valuable on a like for like basis.

In general though, like Woof Woof said I think you will find 28 too long for a general lens on a crop body.

When I had a crop Canon ( seems years ago now) I used a 24-105 f4 L teamed with a sigma 10-22 and the 70-200 F4 L without any problem.
I bought the 24-105 because I felt the 17-50(ish) range was a bit short and the 15-85 Canon was not then available, would I do it now, well that would depend how much I used the 10-20 at 10-15mm if the answer was not a lot I would go for the 15-85.
