This week the challenge is...

Night

Indoors/Outdoors/doesn't matter, as always anything goes really... so long as it doesn't require an NSFW tag!!

Usual rules apply:

All entries must be new photos, taken within the timeframe of the comp.
Maximum of 3 entries per person.
Limited PP, cropping, exposure control, sharpening etc is okay, multi layered cut and pasting is not.
The winner chooses the theme for the following challenge.

Entries can be posted from 8pm on Thursday 6th August until 8pm on Sunday 9th August, with the winner announced later that evening.

As always, take photos, and have Fun.

I most likely won't be around on Thursday to post a reminder about this. So someone feel free to jump and do it for me!

I'll leave myself a note to bump the thread on Thursday, but no promises :)

I will also try to produce an entry or two as well.

Thanks Tim. I'm out on a little photography expedition on thursday, so know well it will be followed by a few beverages!

The thread is now open for entries.

Cheers for that Tim. I was expected to be flooded with entries by this morning, come on folks get your entries up

:coat:

Well Im new to this, but I did get out last night and get a couple of shots, more fluke then actually taking pics for this as Ive only just seen it.

I dont think they are particularly great photos as its the 1st proper time of me trying at night

Anyhow, my 3 (would like your feed back, I can start another thread with them if needs be :))

Hi all,

One so far.

someone had to do it...

After two evenings out and many many pics taken, I've finally got a pic that I'm almost happy with hehe

I'm pretty sure thats Ursa Major in the background :) Apart from the full ish moon behind me it was total blackness which meant no auto-focus, is that normal or is there some kinda work around? Even in manual, I was finding it hard to tell if the pic was sharp.
I might get out again on Saturday night, need to have a re-think on location though.

Good theme... I don't have an entry ... but to answer Comfy's question, yes that is part of Ursa Major, the tail area in fact. No, there is no secret to it, focusing on the night sky is just plain hard. At the moment, with the moon up, you could always focus on the moon. Otherwise, liveview at 10x and carefully tweak the focus manually.

These were taken last night at Gunwharf quays Portsmouth. Was very busy so used small aperture and slow shutter speeds to try and eliminate the passers by.

Restaurant menu's on Broughton Street in Edinburgh near where I live. Great street with lots of cool cafes, people and interesting things to photograph.

Ok, apologies for the delay. Had a shed load going on this weekend so only got around to checking this before bed!

And boy, I have to say, this was really difficult to decide. All images were cracking so I'm finding it hard to even choose a top 3! Anyway, here's what I think.

In third place is Merc with:

In second place is Jennyb with:

In first place...

Comfy

Comfy: Even though you mentioned the pic might not be pin sharp, I really liked it. Especially how you captured the stars. How long was the exposure on that shot by the way?

Jennyb: Was very impressed with this too. Pin sharp as well!

Merc: Excellent spot. And I love the glaring light in the bottom left of the photo.

Have to say, it was really hard to even choose a top 3. I thought the standard was excellent. And even after narrowing it down to a top 3 it took me a long time to choose the winner!

Congrats to the winners. I especially liked the moth and the lighthouse. I might have swapped their positions, or perhaps not, but it was indeed close.

Sorry I couldn't take part this week. Maybe next time.

I would like to add my congrats to the winners to. I thought that moth shot was spectacular and obviously a lot of work went into producing it.

Yes. The standard was excellent this week. Thanks for making it so hard on me you lot :bat: :D:D

And it was exceptionally close between the Moth and the Lighthouse. I literally couldn't choose between them to be honest, so I just had to go with which I felt best represented the theme.

Oh wow :D Many thanks Karmagarda.
I was impressed by all the entries, especially Jennyb's lovely moths.

I'll hurry off and get a subject for this weeks competition.

BTW Karmagarda - f4, 30secs
