27" Monitor

Dell u2711.

I'm trying to work out whether 1 30" dell or 2x27 would do

I wouldn't personally touch LG with a barge pole as they don't tend to last that long!
Do a bit investigating in relation to the screen colour reflecting the colour of your photos and also look at getting a calibration tool.
When I was hunting around for a new large monitor for photo editing, yes looked at the pro stuff which will start at around £1000, probably for 24 inch.
I then looked at the resolution. At the end of the day it was about being able to see as much of the photo on the screen as possible at 100%. (this day and age you aren't going to see the whole image on the screen). Your LG has a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 (which is the HD screen resolution).
In the end, I settled on a Samsung Syncmaster T260 which is 26 inches with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1200, which is one of the largest resolutions you can get before going into the professional range which goes up to 2200 x something. The point being, I would see less of an image on a 27 inch monitor than i would on the 26 inch screen, and at the time I think I paid just over £300, as opposed to say £550 for a Dell.
Just my thoughts and the Samsung hasn't let me down at all (combined with a Spyder 3 Pro).
