Coming Nov 1st is the all new 26 Things. Its basically a photographic scavenger hunt. Tracy, who runs the project, will post a list of 26 things and we have to take pics. Its a lot of fun trying to get pics of random things you probably normally overlook.

Sounds very groovy - I'll be up for that :)

Thar be photography marathons here in Cardiff apparently - need to have a bit more of a look into that one.

I looked into it last year. it had to be on film not sure about this year.

Cheers Pete... number 24 from Septembers list would have had me totally stumped... other than that I can see a lot of cliched type shots.

Definitely.

We've now added a 26things section to the TP Galleries, so feel free to share your ideas and shots in there :)

Well thats the beauty of it. You can enjoy the hunt or you can try and use it as extreme conceptualism (if thats a word). You have 30 days or so to think differently on 26 themes.

Yup... im really looking fowards to this... it will give me something else to think about at work. Ill take the November list and jot down ideas for each topic... suppose anything is better than actually working.

think i might have a go at this

November's list is out now and it looks like it could be fun!

One of the rules is:

Basic photographic editing techniques (cropping etc.) are allowed. Your items are supposed to be photographs, not digital manipulations so don't go nuts in Photoshop

Does that mean HDR's aren't allowed?

Well strictly speaking I don't go nuts in Photoshop. I go nuts in Photomatix ;)

It means other than a crop/resize you're not meant to do anything else with it, its meant to be as your camera captures it rather than something you create in photoshop.

I asked if it disallowed HDR's :)

And I answered your question :p

A HDR is the merging together of two seperate images (well, the same image with different shadow/highlight settings) to create one picture, its touch and go as to whether you should really just shoot in JPG rather than in RAW - all of the things you can do in RAWshooter are digital manipulations that analogue users don't have access to :/

I dunno, I guess its not really a competition thats going to be judged anywhere as such, there aren't any prizes, but you'd probably get an icy reception on that site if you put forward an HDR photo ;)

Surely on this site we wont mind if someone wanted to spend hours in photoshop or any other software, we using it more for the ideas aren't we?

November list is :

1:glee
2:village
3:reality
4:accident
5:anxiety
6:low
7:copy
8:kindness
9:bad taste
10:stairwell
11: public transport
12:art
13:shoes
14:Friday
15:alley
16:7pm
17:telephone
18:ant's eye view
19:words
20:odd
21:a stop sign
22:traditional
23:the sea
24:stripes
25:tangled
26:a night shot

 I dunno, I guess it depends how people want to do it - people might want to do the whole thing in the spirit of the original competition, others might want to just use it for inspiration.

I think most people use this as inspiration rather than a competition (IE in the spirit it is intended I think).

WRT HDR's I think it's touch and go. You can make a very believable HDR, yet you can make a very "Non believable one" (Like I did on my first attempt).

I don't think HDR's are a problem, I think their comment about photoshop refers to collages, blending, pasting, and manipulating an image.

All HDR is, is representing a large tonal range that was originally captured by the camera. You're not technically adding anything that wasn't there are you?

I think we're going to have a go at this - sounds like it might be fun and will certainly get us thinking about our photography.

Agreed. Its always been my main rule that I never add to an image, I only adjust what was there originally. I think the spirit of the competition is that you're meant to hunt for ideas and take photos, not show off how much you know in Photoshop. I think I'll play nice and leave the Photoshopping to a minimal. Only minor adjustments in RAW and black & white conversions. However, I may use the images later on for HDR :naughty:

Just a suggestion, maybe we should have a monthly competition at Talkphotography similar to this, but with 10 things.

:agree: Slighty less may encourage people to take part, as I myself and many others may struggle to get out there and snap 26 items, maybe scrap the fornightly and do this instead?

Is there a need for another monthly comp?

Whats happened to the Fortnightly Assignment shoot, why not just revive that?

Just a couple of random thoughts :)

Aye we can incorporate it into the fortnightly assignment if everyone prefers :)

That is not a bad idea as I keep forgetting the fortnightly exists!

aye i think we can make the fortnightly a bit more useable!

so - how are people getting along with "26 things" then? I've got a few categories nailed I think.....and we're heading into London on saturday for the Lord Mayors Show (yet MORE fireworks!) and to see what else we can get.

Only just spotted this thread.....
I have a day off on Thursday which i am gonna devote to myself and the camera instead of housework and other mundane stuff. The list gives me plenty to go at :)

I spent a full shift at work making a list of ideas to images to take for each subject... i had some very simple, but imo, effective shots planned :D then i went and lost the list. :(
