Hi all,

I am looking at getting a 24mm prime lens
so far i have seen canon's 24mm 2.8 and sigma 1.8 version

are there anymore to chose from @24mm as neither of these are USM/HSM, for a prime the canon is slow. The sigma from reviews suffers from their QC problems.

I dont know if the better 28mm 1.8 will be ok in terms of focal length but i'm just not decided on what to do.

you funding this? :p

If you're happy to go a little wider then there's EF20/2.8 has USM

Bob

thanks canon bob, th 24mm has accceptable distortion on the crop sensor of mine. I think the 20mm is going to be a little too wide. iirc the sensor is roughly 22mm so want to stay above that to control the distortion.

I'm salivating at the idea of f1.4..............would love the 24mm but have you seen the price!! :bonk:

I have the 20mm f2.8 (Santa last year),but for some reason it just doesn't float my boat though I truely don't know why. Perhaps I should persist with it a bit more, but I think in a "just won the lottery" kind of world, I would rather be a bit narrower and have that extra light capability.

Have you though about hiring a couple out to try them? Lenses for hire does a brilliant service.....StewartR on here.

i might have to hire them out! apart from the L lens i dont feel parting money with any of them at all.

Seek out a Zuiko 21mm f2. I cannot find one for my old OM bodies, they're all on Canon 1Ds...

there is one on ebay a snip at £725 (Buy-it-now)

I've been having a similar quandry around a wider prime, I've decided to try and get hold of a cheaper 28mm f2.8 and see how much I use it, If I get alot of use out of it I'll look to upgrade to the f1.8 at a later date.

I used the 24mm f2.8 for the best part of 6 months, and it hardly left the camera.

Loved it, and it was 10 years old. Gave good IQ. Only quibble about it, was the small focussing ring.

I think you're probably labouring under some sort of misconception here. Your statement would imply that 24mm focal length on a crop sensor wouldn't be distorted whereas 24mm on a full-frame sensor would be. But the amount of distortion which a lens produces is completely independent of what kind of camera it's mounted on.

i thought a FF camera would have a wider FOV than a crop sensor with the same lens?
