I have a 7D and expect to keep it for roughly another 12 months before going FF.

I'm off to Morocco in May and want a fast, wide prime to take with me for capturing the Marrakesh markets & night life.

The big question is......35mm or 24mm f1.4???

I've changed my mind every week so far, but expect to buy in the next few days.

The price difference isn't a problem, but I just need to settle on a focal length which won't be frustrating.

Does anyone own both lenses on a crop? Which one do you love the most? :)

Surely only you can know which will suit you the most? I see you have the 24-105mm, why not set that to 24 and 35mm and see which you prefer. simple :)

I did that earlier today, and I'm still undecided!

On the one hand the 24mm is the latest and greatest, obviously wider, great indoors.
On the other hand the 35mm is cheaper, better for group shots, but maybe a bit too long.

I'm sure it'd become obvious if I had both in front of me....

well personally, if it were me, 35mm on a 1.6 crop would be to narrow for the street style work you mentioned. I'd rather shoot nice and wide and get up close and personal for a bit of atmosphere

/me teeters towards 24mm

If you are moving to FF and only intend to get just one of those lenses then it has to be the 35L.

Having used the 35mm on my old 400D on a trip round London, I have to say I bloody loved it! It's quite a big lens, much bigger than I expected it to be, but the bokeh is like double cream, so ridiculously smooooooooth

This is a pic of my friend, taken with the 400D:

And this pic of me from aforementioned friend and his 5D mk2:

Both shots at f1.4

A 5D MkIII will have to show up before I move to FF, so we're talking at least 12 months before it's a sensible price. So I need something fast at the wide end before then.

24mm is in the lead at the moment, better for 'street shots' and I can always crop in for people. It becomes a super-wide '15mm equiv' if I went FF, and could always buy a 35mm as well in time, or swap it for a 35mm f1.4. (mkII should be out by then!).

It's a sunny day and I want to drop £1200. Somebody stop me :)

If you're buying for now I'd say 24mm without a doubt.

Why not just save some cash.Get the Sigma 30 F1.4 which sits in the middle of the 24 and 35mm.You can then sell it for minimal loss when you go full frame. The 35 MK2 "might" be out by then.

That statement makes no sense to me.

I suspect he means it would be equivalent to what a 15mm lens on his current crop camera would be when used on full frame.

You could always get the 24mm now, and then if you find it's too wide on your full-frame when you get it you could always trade for the 35mm - shouldn't be a problem at all!

I have both, previously bought the 24mm for my 400D and now have the 35mm on the 5D mk2. Still use both for street photography in an around London, Soho and the Southbank. I'd pump for the 24mm with your 7D as it's perfect for use in a crowded street or at an indoor party/gallery opening. It just about gives you the same coverage as a 35mm on FF.

Now go hit that buy button :)

Thanks for a range of opinions guys! Most appreciated. Especially Baulk who seems to have been in exactly the same situation as me.

I'm sure i'll end up with both eventually - but for now. The winner is...........

<drum roll>

EF 24mm f/1.4 L II USM

Cheers

It has arrived!

Nope, I didn't change my mind. 24 millimetres of L series happiness....

It feels much heavier than my 24-105mm, even though it's fractionally lighter.

Can't wait to use it in anger
