I've been dusting off my landscapes lenses, today and noticed my 24-105 F4L has developed a problem. It will not lock auto focus between 35mm and 50mm, it just keeps hunting. All other focal lengths lock AF as they should, ie, autofocus OK.

I'm not particularly worried about, it's just an annoyance. It's quite a narrow band of range, about 15mm and I can manually focus there if I need to. I can live with it.

Considering the age of the lens now, I'd be reluctant to get it repaired, I'd rather invest in a new lens. I would though like to understand what could be the problem. I have found very little online about it, the closest I've got to nailing it is something with a data cable breaking or rubbing over time.

Only last week, I was going to trade this lens, maybe it heard me and is protesting.

Anyone else experienced this with the Mk1?

TIA.

I don't have one, but just wondered..

Have you tried cleaning the pins/contacts?

Do you have it in servo AF?
Does it still do it if pointed at something at differant distances?

I guess you've tried it on more bodies?

Just throwing ideas out, sorry if you've tried all the above .. I'll get back in my box

Tried everything Bud, even on my film camera. It seems to be between 37 and 52mm.

Thanks for the suggestions (y), I will give the contacts another clean.

It's certainly scuppered trading it, or selling it here. My best bet is to sell it with the caveat but that's probably more than it's worth.

I'm browsing other lenses now, every cloud. ;)

Nice excuse to upgrade ..

Seems odd. No suggestions other than a repair but as you say it may not be worth it.

It reminds me of a car I once owned, parts cost more than it was worth...and I won't even mention the labour. :runaway:

I know there can be an issue with a ribbon cable, but not sure if it affects the focusing

Worth contacting him. He repairs several different lenses.

Cheers,

I'm thinking the zoom mechanism rubs the cable and wears or damages it over time.

Thank you, I will look into that. (y)
