This week the challenge is...

Reflections
Can be a mirror, something reflecting on the surface of a bottle, someone deep in thought, every sense of the word!

Usual rules apply:

All entries must be new photos, taken within the timeframe of the comp.
Maximum of 3 entries per person.
Limited PP, cropping, exposure control, sharpening etc is okay, multi layered cut and pasting is not.
The winner chooses the theme for the following challenge.

Entries can be posted from 8pm on Thursday 9th until 8pm on Sunday 12th July, with the winner announced later that evening.

Have fun!

damn, already posted an image i could have used.

And I've already dismissed an image I might have used, as it was not up to the standard of all the others in that Reflections thread.:naughty:

Looks like we'll both have to shoot somethign new for the theme eh?

I hope I didn't put the same theme as a past week? Anyway good luck to everyone!

Ditto - I've already done quite a few mirror shots. Looks like I'll have to try to come up with something new for this week.

, never mind guys.

Well, the whole point of this for me was to try and force me to try something new . . . so I suppose since I've done quite a few mirror shots it'll make me put my thinking cap on and attempt something different.

Good luck all - I look forward to seeing everyone's entries this week.

Just 2 hours (with the time here) until submissions! can't wait!

I'll start the ball rolling... A couple from Sunday...

If I get a chance to do any more reflection images over the weekend, i may add to this.

 Already some really good entries on here !

Here's my first attempt for this week. I've already done quite a lot with mirrors, so I thought I'd give reflections in water a try to see if I could capture some of the movement in the water. I know all you clever people could probably do this far easier in processing, but I don't like to make my life too easy and besides I'm totally inept at editing ;)

1) Mask reflected in water

And No.2 . . . making the most of the last bit of sun in the garden. They've forecast rain for the weekend now :(

2) Evening Sun

Finally No.3 . . . I did have a rose floating water for this, but uniquegardens has already posted his chrysanthemum and it's much better than my try ;). So here's my 3rd attempt.
It's been processed more than my other 2, but hopefully it's still within the rules.

Here's my (rather lacklustre) entry. Only noticed this today after I was processing the pic and seen my own reflection in the birds eye as well as the horizon behind me and some clouds. May have to click on the pic for the bigger version to get a better look at the actual reflection though.

Tommy.

hi all,

couple from me so far...

No1. wine glasses

No 2. Chrysanthemum head in water

Argh! This is going to be so hard to choose! too much good entries this week !

Couple from me of one of my favourite subjects: Cars!

#1: Fiat 500 Abarth

#2: Ferrari California

Last call for entries!

I found very difficult to choose the winner this week, because they were very good shoots done by everyone, however 3 stood out most for me !

3# goes to Crazy Jay for this great shot, I like the fact that each side of the building is reflecting the opposite side, almost looks like a 3rd construction you can see trough, congratulation for the 3rd place!

#2 Goes to UniqueGuardens for this amazing shot, I really love the peacefull beat this picture has, I really like the ''grainy'' feel of it, nice colors, nice depth of feild, I also really liked your wine glass shot for thinking outside the box.

And finaly #1 goes to Sarahlee, I always liked seeing your improvement each week and this week I feel like you came up with a masterpiece, very nice subject, very artsy shot, I love it, one of my favorite shot so far in the weekly challenges. GOOD WORK!
3-8.jpg

Others shot were also very good, but personally those three stood out for me.

Up to sarahlee for the next week challenge! (Hooray I will be able to shoot for this one :) )

Well done Sarah  and everone else too.

Congrats to some worthy entries this week. I decided it wasn't worth entering after post #18, despite making a concerted effort to take some reflective shots this past week. I have to say the winner really was an excellent shot - well done!

Roll on the next challenge.

Thank you Maxathos !
My second challenge and a first place :$ :) :) :)

Thanks to the rest of you too, for the kind words.
I'm at work at the moment and really shouldn't be on here at all. Just dropped in to see who won the competition - I had my favourite too and I really didn't think it would be me!

I'll set up next week's challenge when I get home tonight.

Well done Sarah Lee. The reflections theme really brought out some lovely work from everybody, so it was a very well earned win.

I'm quite surprised I got a placing in this one, there were some really lovely shots in this week.

Thank you Maxathos for my second place!

Many congrats to Sarahlee, nicely shot and very artistic-well done.

Also congrats to crazyJay on your shot too.

Sorry for the flying visit this morning - I was at work and only had time to type a couple of lines.
New thread is now set up for this week's comp - usual rules apply.

Well done to everyone on the "reflections" theme. There were some fantastic entries and I still can't believe that I won.
There were too many really good ones to mention them all, and I'm glad that I didn't have to pick a winner.
Congratulations to uniquegardens and CrazyJay on 2nd and 3rd places though. IMO either of those would have made a worthy winner.

What I did

Following on from Maxathos's example last week, this is how I went about taking that photo :

I ended up taking about 20 shots, experimenting with different shutter speeds, and I can't remember which one I used for that particular photo. However, I found the faster the shutter speed the better the effect with the water (provided that I could still actually see the resulting image!)
Aperture was wide open and I used a flash to get more lighting on the mask.

The set up was simple. Sheet of black card on a table & another sheet of black card as a background. I used a black tray with about half an inch of water in it and propped the mask up on a candle holder to get the position right.

The camera was set on a tripod, and just before releasing the shutter I ran my fingers through the water to create the ripples and bubbles.

This is the unedited shot that I decided to work with :

6-1.jpg

Processing was very basic (basic is about all that I can manage).
Very slight adjustment to overall brightness and colour.
Photo cropped to give a composition that I liked.
Dodge and burn tools used to tweak the exposure . . . darkening parts of the background and lightening areas of reflection. The graininess in the foreground water was accidental and due to my inexperience at editing, but I quite liked the effect so I left it.
