I just wanted to get people's opinions what would you go for next? Budget would be 600-900ish.

Nothing wrong with my 20D but I am thinking about having a second Digi body (have a 1n film body as my second at the moment).

Thanks

I've been wondering the same thing and all I can come up with is D300, D700 or Alpha 850 / 900. I've read so much conflicting stuff on the current Canon line up.

What type of photography do you do? Portrait, macro, motorsport?
What do you find important? Fast AF, high resolution for huge prints...?
Do you want to stick with canon?
Do you want new or do you want the value of second hand?
Do you have EF-s lens that wont work full frame?

The more information you provide the better the answer you'll get.

I think I'll be sticking with Canon as I have spent a lot of time and money building up my lens collection!

Fair points there Fezzr!

Stick with canon
I have two EF-S lenses 60mm f2.8 and have just bought a 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM
so will stay with a crop sensor for now
No objections with buying second hand to kit more kit for my money
I mainly switch between wildlife and portrait photography, some low light work so a decent high iso performance would be good news.

Thanks all!

I think your choices are quite limited in that price range. You have the 50D as the new option or a used 1Dmk2 or 5D

What do you photograph?

Shame about the EF-s lenses, I think you'd love a 1D2n or 5D.
Although do you have other lenses that would cover the same focal length as the EF-s on a FF?

Sadly not a full range of coverage for FF and dont really have the strength or space in my bag to lug two full sets of lenses and two bodies around!

What about the 7D vs the 50D? Is it worth continuing to save and/or wait for the price to come down a little on the 7D over the 50D?

50D is just a small jump ahead of the 40D (which is an excellent camera). I would suggest looking at a used 40D for ~£400, or saving up for the 7D. I personally do not think the 50D is worth a few hundred more than the 40D.

40D plus a nice lens.

50D without a doubt, the lens micro adjustment alone is worth jumping over the 40D. Just re-calibrated my 100 macro lens and its made a huge difference to where the lens focuses.
Although I'd be very very tempted by a 7D but its nowhere near your budget.

(unless the 40D has this feature, which I dont think it does)

MatBin you say that but I saw a body only (which is all I need) for £1200 so figure if I wait 3-6 months I might be able to find one for around the £1000 mark.

I will probably take a look at a 7D one day but I am a little put off by persistent comments about softness and the noise that seems evident in many lower ISO shots on the net.

I don't usually crop my 20D shots a lot but I did some heavy cropping recently to retrieve something keepable from shots that I'd taken in the snow when snow had got on the lens and I hadn't noticed. After cropping so that no splodges were visible I was pleasantly surprised how big the image still was. So, I've started to question why I'm even thinking about changing cameras, except the urge to buy new toys.

I think I'm probably going to wait a while and see how the 40D 50D 7D crop sensor battle pans out. As you say the 20D can produce some fantastic quality images as it is and I'm not a pro so it may be a little pixel envy on my part rather than actual need! Guess MP count isn't everything but recently I've been having some prints blown up and I would like to be able to go a little larger than I can at the moment. It may be just my technique but I dont seem to be able to get great images above A3 (or equivalent) in size.

Generally 7D's are going for between £1250 and £1300 at the moment, I recon you will see a few more 7D's going second hand when the 1D4 catches on and drops in price.

Love it :)
£600/900 budget and the current price is £1300 (approx) which is as you say "almost in budget", wonder if I could swing that one past my wife, "it's only double what I had budgetted for dear" :)

Gets my vote!!

all tongue in cheek, I think you might well be right that the 7D drops to your budget in 3/6/9 months.

Matt

I'm sure she'll go with my logic! May take 6 months to swing though. Besides 900 to 1000 isn't so far with 6 months to save!

Personally, there's nothing wrong with the 20D, ok its my 2nd body now because the 1D MKIIn my main camera, 20D still gets used and takes great images. I mainly shot action photography and both bodies are still ideal for what I need, and both can produce quality A2 prints, so not too fussed with the MPixel war, 8mp's are fine for what I need.

Instead of a body, what about new glass. Why do you want a new camera body?
