*****Please note the changes to the ETC*****

Building on the past two year's ETC Project challenge, we thought we would have a bit of an overhaul to make it less of a daunting project and more of a fun, inspirational thing to try.

So each month, we'll be posting an effect, technique or creative idea which give you inspiration to try something you haven't tried or thought of before. We've seen all the water splash fun and spinning wool but have you heard of timeslicing, the droste effect or how about making your own pinhole camera?

Well this thread will show you how to do these and with the staff and members (and the help of google) to guide you along the way, we'll soon get you stepping into a different, creative world of photography.

We'll use this thread for posting your photos, discussion of ideas and the technique and support and I'll create a thread per theme each month which you can add your photos, support each other and just have fun along the way.

The rules are just to have fun with it. You can try one month or you can try all the months. There's no limit on when you can try them. If for example you want to try the March theme but have the perfect idea for it in June, that's fine.

January:

Hi Kelly,

Please count me in for 2015!

I tried in 2013 but time and inexperience got the better of me, was going to try again in 2014 but got married which meant lots of organising and not much spare time!

This time I think it will properly help me progress as opposed to scaring the hell out of me again!

Many thanks, Phil.

3rd time lucky :D

Oops that's a good start to the year! Sorry folks, had a house party that finished at 6am this morning and have spent the day feeling very sorry for myself on the sofa. I will put the themes on shortly

I've also simplified the rules slightly as well

Hi guys,
I am going to have ago at 52 this year I last entered it in 2011 and failed so was just checking back and found that the link for it is still on but it goes to flickr page for which I can't access due to an email account verification problem i.e. email account is not available on hotmail so, My question is, to upload the photos for the competition do I have to have a flickr account ?

Regards Carl

Ok ta Kelack

Thread tidied a little and Southdowns told why. If we can keep this thread for people to use as an encouragement and discussion of the themes thread

Good stuff. I'll do my best to keep the momentum going

I've updated the first post with the details :)

I have been googling Time Split....need to do some study and find and interesting location........hopefully near Hythe but might need to travel......

I've been looking too as I had never heard of it (Time slicing).

I take it that it is the one where you use one camera in a fixed position and take the same image - say - 15 times and then do a slice of each one - something like this:

http://www.citylab.com/tech/2014/09/time-slicing-cityscapes-at-dusk/380899/

I haven't found any tutorials for doing this in Elements (assuming I am talking about the same thing that you are:))

Can anyone provide links to any please?

NB what does ETC stand for?

Two tics as I think I posted a link on the 2014 thread so I'll find it and add it to the first post. But yes, that's exactly what it is

And

Effects, Techniques and Creativity :D

Here's the link from the 2014 thread but I'll see if I can find how to do it. I'm sure I have seen it as I won't post a theme unless I can find a tutorial on google

http://news.distractify.com/pinar/dan-marker-moore-time-slice/

It would be really good if you could find one - I have searched and not found anything.

I have also asked on Elements Village:

http://www.elementsvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83276

and at the moment it even has them stumped (which is very unusual:()

Currently I am resorting to copying bits off various websites that refer to this technique with a view to compiling some sort of 'guide in principle' but so far I have not found anything specific on the actual processing.

For the avoidance of confusion I should emphasise that at the moment it is just this technique that I am interested in - I probably won't be taking part in the actual theme proper:(

I have added a link to the OP. I'm also going to give it a go but I will have to wait til February (I didn't think that through haha)

In photoshop, you will need to use the slice tool along with masking and layering

And feel free to join in this month, it is a simplified challenge so if you want to use it as inspiration for something new, then feel free

I'm adding a few more. It's also called HDTR and Intervalography

Thanks Kelly - I need to give up for the evening but I will post ?tomorrow what I have found out in case it helps others

Can you post the finished image anytime through the month

Yes, feel free. Don't tell me you've done yours already?!

I've added a good tutorial to the OP, should be quite useful

O me of little faith - the people on EV have produced the goods - here is a link to a video that shows an easy way to timeslice using layers:

http://www.kiki.co.za/blog/2012/11/07/sliced-photo-effect-with-masking-technique/

I think it is complementrary to the links in the OP

And more general stuff that I've collected from:

http://www.kiki.co.za/blog/2012/11/07/sliced-photo-effect-with-masking-technique/

is:

Before you start

Practice processing ‘slices’ using a specimen image
It’s no good taking a load of pictures for ‘time slicing’ if you then can’t actually process them

Location

Choose a place where you:
  • will not be disturbed
  • can set up your tripod, or have your camera ona firm base
  • can have a good composition (regardless of any ‘time-slicing’)
  • can expect the:
    • turning on (?or off) of citylights
    • a good sunrise
    • a good sunset

Taking the actual photographs

If taking sun-rise/sunset or city lights coming on/off make sure you know times of these

Decide how many ‘slices’ you will be using – would be sensible to start off with a small number for your first attempt.

Smaller slices will look smoother but will involve more work.

To figure out how wide or tall your slice should be (depending on which way you want to orient the slices) you simply take the number of pixels your image is and divide it by the number of photos you want in the timelapse

Start taking pictures?60 minutes before the due time

You won’t necessarily need an intervalometer controller, but a remote cable release and a watch would be very useful.

You might need to experiment with exposure settings, but “Auto” should work well.

Bracket images so that you can have a better choice for matching changing tones etc

You will probably need different exposure times when taking actual photos because of changes in light levels

Include a timestamp of the exact second when the slice was snapped to help you process them in the correct order and for later reference

I probably won't be entering this challenge but I was interested I finding put about this Time Slice technique.

Here are two 'Time Slice' versions of the same basic image that I had a go at. I darkened the base image using curves and then 'Time Sliced' them.

This 'stripey' version uses the method at:

The 'smooth' version uses the method at:

The picture is of Leicester.

Very good effort there. Well done and thanks for posting your results. They look really good

Thanks - A friend of mine who project manages building construction said he would quite like to have some city-scapes on the walls of his new house so I was interested to see if 'Time slicing' might be something he would like - and I think it will be if only I can get a good starting point - so thanks for raising the entire issue:)

I have a similar project in mind so it will be good to give it a go. Feel free to dip into this thread each month and see if anything else inspires you

Thanks - will do:)

I stumbled across this thread by accident and thought the theme sounded interesting so I thought I'd give it a go. I didn't know about the smooth version so might have to edit mine again. I think it is a theme that would benefit a wider panorama.

Very good Lee, I do like that very much

I'm just starting mine. I did a timelapse yesterday with 1,875 frames haha. Just selected 25 out of that at 5 minute intervals so should have 25 decent slices. It may not work as it's a football stadium, might have to do some cloning of players out of it

Please note that we have had a bit of an overhaul of this challenge :) I have updated the OP with the new idea

You might need to refresh

I'm having a mare with my timeslicing! My camera must have kept catching the wind so some of it is just slightly out. Plus attempting to clone half players out of slices! I might give up this evening and give it another go tomorrow after work. I think if I have 1,875 files, there should be enough in there to a) clean up the players and stewards, b) align c) get a good graduation of the light. I have got the masking knack down to a tee now though :D

I think that's a good change Kelly!

I will keep my eye on this :)

Cheers, and hopefully there will be some you didn't try last year - as well as this one, I already have 2 new suggestions from the staff

The new etc looks good to me.

Just t?tried the 4 links and couldn't get the second one - mkweb - to work on my tablet

You're right, it's very, very slow to open on my phone. I've removed the link. I also think that the best one is the ormsdirect one that you found. That's the one I used. It's very simple to follow even for a complete PS dummy like me :D
