Ok, so the learning process begins. I tried my first "Joiner" today. I was disappointed with the results but I've decided to post my failures as well as my successes this year, and I'm already loving that I have 4 weeks or so to reshoot, appraise, reshoot appraise, and so on...

Anyway, I've always been a fan of David Hockney and for my first effort I tried to emulate his picture shown below. I wanted to get a polaroid look so I set the camera to "Auto" and jpeg and then I forced a 1x1 crop on all the images in PP and also applied a post crop vignette to try and make them all look as though they varied in processing like real polaroids would do.

It was unsuccessful because:

1) I was on flash (Duh)
2) way too far away from my subject
3) too short in the focal length
AND
4) I didn't take near enough shots.
5) I should have looked at the picture I was trying to emulate before I started instead of going from memory.
AND
6) tbh I thought it would be easy, after all it looks so easy!

With this lesson learned I am looking forward to a second try over the weekend (in daylight) and I think I will have a look for a polaroid style preset for lightroom (or create one). I'm also going to shoot a set of pics to try and create an "overlapping" joiner.

Ooohhh, a fan of Mr H? Love his work and regularly visit Salt's Mill to look at his work. His ability to previsualise is stunning.

Decent effort. As you say, getting closer would take it up several levels.

Good show.

Chests.

I thought this technique would have been straight forward, just grab a single shot then use PS to split/rotate/tweak into something that resembled the final product. How wrong was I!

Will be following your progress

Thanks Andy, Yeah, DH has done some great stuff, Some of his landscape paintings look like they are views from a balloon! :D And even though he got a bit negative about photography in the end, everyones entitled to an opinion eh?

Chests? - is that "Autocomplete" for cheers?

Cheers! :cow:

Thanks Lee. I think the whole point of this technique is that each individual image is from a slightly different viewpoint creating an illusion to the viewer of the final joined image that they have closely inspected the subject as well as seeing the overall "bigger picture" (that pun was most definitely not intended!) which for me gives something more than just "a photo".

This is just whats in my head of course and I could easily be wide of the mark! I must confess that while I like looking at art I read very little! I think I may have to do some research ... Perhaps that will be a spin off benefit for me this month :D

Cheers :cow:

A good insight to your first attempt and it has made me think further for my first go.

I take it that the one photo converted into a joiner effect is not the way to go, better to take many and link them together?

Can I ask, did you shoot at a low resolution so that the finished file will not become a monster when you join them all together?

Thanks, that was my intention, to get some "work in progress" discussions going, I was hoping that those of us who are doing this can get some collaboration going... Learn from and bounce ideas off of each other. If we all just posted our results I think we would get less out of it.

I didn't think that would work, as I said above I think it's the multiple view points that make this what it is.

With that said, when I do my panoramic one that will all be from the same spot...

So perhaps it would work, Who knows! I reckon that as it's your idea you should give it a go and post up your findings

Yeah, ask anything you want! I processed the individual images to be 600 pixels square, then I reduced the final composite to be 600 pixels across the long edge to post it as a jpeg on here.

I'm out with my camera buddies this afternoon so I'm hoping to get some more shots to work with, hopefully I'll get another effort up by the end of the weekend.

Cheers :cow:

I like the look of the joiner effect, but they all test you! Good to see someone has jumped in. Have a look on Flickr for other examples, there are some simple but effective ones. Now just to grab some of that inspiration....

As you say you just need to be a little closer or zoom in a bit, not a bad first effort though :)

Chests ;)

Brian, that is great information

I think I am going to set something up at home to photography, something that wont move. I can then play around in PS and if needs be go back and get some extra photos, hopefully have mine started this weekend

Great stuff. I look forward to seeing the results.

I did a similar thing for my A level (A2) art project some years ago. I took tons of pictures of myself side on in the mirror, then sorted through the shots to make a life size image of myself. I was doing art rather than photography so I painted each of the selections in watercolour then joined the (disjointed) pictures together. I stuck them all onto the backs of rolls of wallpaper and suspended it. It was a lot of work, much more than I anticipated but it got me through the exam and I quite enjoyed the experience. Good luck on your next attempt. My advice is to take a really lot of photos from slightly different angles initially.

Thanks Duncan, I will take lots. :)

I went to an old ruin with a couple of togs from here on Friday to play with a bit of light painting. (Metroman and MrNicholas.)

While we were waiting for it to get dark I shot a few groups of shots with a view to doing some more "conventional" joiners and whilst I'm not over the moon with the results I do think they show promise. Although I do expect to follow Duncans advice above (eventually) and shoot lots of pics, I found the ones with fewer shots (or at least where I used fewer shots from the "group") came out best, perhaps I need to understand more of the technique before I can get the more complicated ones to work (and by this I mean "to my liking") but for now, keeping it simple helped with the learning process. I'm not really looking for critique on these but here's three to mark my progress so far:

I have unfinished business with the "polaroid" grid and then I will come back to some more of these later. I'm loving this so far!

Not bad, I think I prefer the bottom one best.

I have taken a few different sets of photos to practise on, I now have to join them :-)

Thought I'd commented....must have been distracted by all the chests :)

Some nice joiners there. Of the 3, it's #3 for me. I really like the layout and BG. It's a personal thing but I'd like to see a bit more disjointedness, IYSWIM.

Cheers.....:)

Good work on the last three Brian - you;re right about the first one you posted up.

I've only ever done one of these, back in the PP game.. and I think that it needs to look not like a badly stitched panorama, but as something intentional.

Maybe varying focal lengths, as well as positions as you've suggested, Auto settings is good as is the border / drop shadows you have.

I've somehow ended up taking a shot for the 52's, and making a thread, but I think I'll keep a watch in here (y)

Got any new updates Brian? I had been struggling and resorted to doing something at home that i thought wouldn't take up much of my time!

Chop chop, old chap...it's day 10 and you've only posted one theme :naughty: :exit:

I will only be doing one theme at a time. I've decided that I will try for quality over quantity this year.

Hi Lee, no "work in progress" updates to add I'm afraid, I haven't had time for my camera for a couple of weeks now... It's a long story!

I still have over a week before I do my monthly round up! :cow:

Thanks Alan, It's been so nice not to have the pressure of an imminent deadline that I "fell asleep" for a fortnight!

:D

... and ive actually found time to take some photographs instead of fretting about the next theme!!!

Over the past fortnight ive been snapping away at a few sunrises whilst on a canal boat with mixed results. Ive also discovered my off the hoof skills are shocking as its been that long since ive been out and about. Most of the themes i done towards the end of the 52 were more "set up" shots as opposed to natural.

Ive been leaving my camera in + or - EV. Running on f8 with shutter speeds of 1/30 at 180mm ........... and i wonder why my shots are over/under exposed and blurry!!!:banghead:

Hi Brian, good work so far. I like your second castle one best, though I'm not sure why! I think it's just because it looks a little more like actual printed shots laid together to me.

OK, I found my head, it was up my @rse! so after a wonderful weekend of meeting lots of lovely TP' ers up in Norfolk U've decided that I'm going to put the joiner thing on the back burner for now. I will come back to it if/when I can produce something that satisfies my expectations for myself....

Meanwhile I have a motion blur submission that I shot at the weekend, Bawsey Ruins near Kings Lynn. With many thanks to Blakester for the loan of his 10 stopper (my welding glass shots looked rubbish, the welding glass reflects the fish eye on the 10mm)

'Ello, that works for me and although the sky wasn't playing, that is looks like some of the clouds weren't wmoving very fast, you have some great detail in the brickwork.

Nice cow in the FG would take it up a level or two :)

Cheers.

That's a nice image mate  nice movement in the clouds and detail in the stone work.

Hi Brian that would have been the first place I would have looked, nice to see you back :cow:
plenty of motion blur in the sky for me (y)

Nice image Brian, something that I want to get out and try, but not going to make it for this month.

Duo Tone Groyne
by Brian of Bozeat, on Flickr

Harder than it looks - I ended up selecting colours that were already there (the blue from the bright sky for the highlights and the Golden brown of the sand for the shadows) anything else looked un-complimentary (to me anyway). Yes I know this was a January theme!

Quite like the duo tone as a photograph....but as I've said elsewhere I don't get the processing style

Cheers.

Nb, just had a quick read in wiki still don't get it:)

Cheers.

I found the duo tones difficult too and ended up simply playing with the red channel. I do like your approach to it.
The last Joiner is also pleasing on the eye with the subtle differences

Good shot Brian. I've done a couple of LE with clouds that weren't moving fast enough for my liking so I know the feeling.

Only 4 days left though... ;)

The whole reason for doing a 12 was to not be pressured by deadlines, just enjoy the learning.

That's a nice image mate (y) nice movement in the clouds and detail in the stone work.

Thanks Mark.

Welcome back, Sir.

Hope you're ok and retrieved your head out your ass :naughty:

Thanks, I'm fine (except for the sh8t in my ears), as Andy will confirm - eh? what? say it again please... LOL

I'm so sorry I couldn't see your thread with my head up there, I will have a catch up and make some comments over the weekend.

Thanks all. Your amazing support (despite my poor efforts so far) have me feeling very loved. :cow:

Hi Brian - that joiner shot of Harrold is tres good. Good comp, excellent colours and suitable textured b/g
Stevington is another super shot . Good pov, bright but fading light in bottom and good clear stars. Just not sure about that ghostly movement(?) feel at the base.
