Today, I rummaged through the loose change in my coin tray purse and saw the back of a 50p coin that had what I first thought was a Maltese Cross. Of course,Malta has the Euro. The current 50p has Brittania on the back. I was about to bin it. Being an honest fellow..lol.. I wouldn't pass it off to a shop.I googled it. It was a Victoria cross.. It had 2006 and 29 Jan 1856 engraved on it and it's in very good condition.I googled it wondering where it came from.

There's a photo of it here. https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/life/1011655/ebay-rare-50p-coin-coins-victoria-cross

Ebay £395 ?? Surely not ?

12 million of them minted?
She's pushing it, listing it as rare.

It was listed at £395. It didn't necessarily sell for £395, or indeed at all.

But £395 is chicken feed. This is showing in the 'sold items' on eBay currently:

FWIW litterally ;)

In some change last year I got a very odd £2 coin it was all one metal i.e. not a combo of two (inner & outer).......................thinking I had been given something dodgy I got it exchanged for a "proper one".

Only at home did I think to look it up.....yes, it was a limited run coin when the £2 coin was introduced.....what did 'tinernet tell me it was worth! As I recall £2.50 as not that rare and not that sought after  Having said that I have no idea why I did not keep it as it was unusual.

Not so rare ,then at 12 millio issued. As you say,Viv..pushing it a bit..a lot infact. lol.Mind you, the Express stated it was rare. Nothing like fake news..lol.

Bit of a disappointment for you. At least if we get something out of the ordinary it can easily be checked with a Google search....then bin it..:D

Got several single metal twocers and keep any commemorative 50p pieces I get, just in case they ever get valuable. Used to have a load of "hands" 50p s from when the UK joined the Common Market but my sister nicked them all!

I wonder what the best offer for it was...
Yeah, that's the trick. There are tons of "rare" coins listed at stupid prices "or best offer". But the way eBay works, the best offer is never published, so the next time you list a "rare" coin you might get lucky and find a mug who will pay vastly over the odds. If eBay published the fact that the best offer was 99p, that wouldn't happen.

Which one? I have about a dozen of the Peter Rabbit ones - someone must have got a bag at a local bank/Post Office and spent them where I got them in change. Not that rare so I reckon the e-Bay sellers asking £2+ are chancers (although some variants [silver proofs etc.] might be worth a few quid.)
