Brolly and a box are a pretty standard choice, but recently, anybody reaching for something else instead?

My two most used items are a softbox and a fresnel spot - which I use in preference to a snoot, for it's more even light, the softer edges and as it has an internal iris.

The two modifiers I have currently are 100cm Rotalux and Maxi Lite. I can pretty much do everything I need/want with these two.

depends what you shoot really, your style etc...


Absolute first call for almost everyone should imo be a quality 2x3 or 3x4 softbox though, incredibly versatile...

All depends on what you need to do.

But mostly I use beauty dish, sometimes with a grid, and a very large softbox.

I'd go for a soft box 40cm or 60cm depending on how portable I need it to be. Does a stand count?
