after reading the 9/11 thread i had a thought well its something that has bugged me for a while.

when did 1 mins silence get replaced with 2mins, is the idea that it is twice as respectful?

and whats the point of standing around for 2mins doing nothing? Does it help the victims of natural and man made disasters, does it help get them aid, or catch the people who did it?

One example is the national 2mins of Remembrance day, the whole country grinds to a holt for 2mins to pay respect (and im not saying they don't deserve it). Is it not more helpful to the veterans to buy the poppy and help their loved ones and fund what ever it is they need?

They fought and died so we could be free and we show are respect for this by doing nothing at all for 2 mins. Would it not be more respectful to do something productive on the 11of November, that's more fitting to what they gave up for us. For example taking an elderly veteran with no family, whos stuck in a nursing home out for day?

I am genuinely interested in people thoughts on the matter.

Minutes silence for me isnt to pay respect.. its to stop and think.. Sometimes you get that chance to really think a lot more than you would in private.. about the event or the popele.. you know everyone else is thinking and remembering

I don't think its meant to do good for the people who died or there ralatives... its for you.. the person doing the minutes silence..

HOWEVER
Since 9/11 theres a lot of people died in tragic circumstances. a lot of people gave there lives and a lot died young and needless.. But they didnt get on sky tv so they dont get remembered... A lot in your own country. in your own town.. maybe even on your estate or street but no one has a minutes silence for them or even your own relatives..

Interesting thought Kipax i never looked at it like that.

I agree about the people that don't get on the news though, i see it all the time.

through the 2minutes silence is intended that we should stop and think about the events that have occured, be it the 11th of september or the london bombings, or the efforts of those who survived or perished in wars.

simply buying a poppy is mearly a fund raising exercise for the charities, and something to help you remember what has happened in the past.

I agree totally with Kipax - it makes you stop and think about what happened, what people went through and in my experience has made me make sure I have bought a poppy. Sadly I have not been generous enough recently with my time to go and talk to a veteran or whoever, but your thread might make me think about doing something more than just dropping a few pennies in a box..

For me it's to stop and think. The same way as I remember what I was doing at around half 11 on 14th July 2007 when I heard the news that a very good friend had died in a motorcycle accident the night before - about 20 minutes after he'd been on the phone to us all saying that he would see us in a bit.

For rugby matches, the minutes silence is for remembrance and to actually stop and think

RIP Luke (no 7 - the shirt he played in) - you will always be in our hearts

Stop and think for me, plus it's especially important on Remembrance Sunday because the way I see it is people took more than a minute or two out of their own lives to help this country and others in the face of evil. 1 or 2 minutes is surely not a problem.

Go and stand at your local Cenotaph and read the names, I bet it takes longer than a minute............they died for what we have today, utmost respect to them.

Same as everyone else, it's a time to stop and think. I do also think it shows respect though as we're giving up a bit of our time to think about how others have suffered. This thing about it changing from 1 minute to 2 though and in some cases hasn't it been 4 minutes? I think that is, as the OP suggested, supposed to be more respectful somehow. So now noone dares just do 1 minute any more as people will start moaning that whatever the situation is, wasn't as important. It should just be 1 minute for everything.

I'd also like to add that I don't see why any amount of silence would stop other things being done such as fund-raising for victims. It doesn't affect those things at all.

How about this 'National day of mourning' that we keep hearing about lately? It always makes the news too. Something bad will happen and a few days later we get 'breaking news' something like...."So and so country have declared today as a national day of mourning". Well that is something I really don't understand.
