Hey, always had a big interest in photoshop initially using it to design stuff for websites. Then started editing some of my dads photos about 2 years ago finding I also had an interest in photo editing.

Come to the point where I'd like to be editing my own photos, instead of someone else's. :thumbs:

I've got about £4/500 to spend and am willing to buy second hand knowing that this isn't a great amount. At the moment I'm enjoying photographing interesting scenes, and will be looking into getting a nice ND filter because long shutter speed shots really interest me.

With my budget I'd be hoping to pick up a nice camera with ideally 1/2 lenses. Is there any obvious cameras I should be keeping my eye on? My dad has a D40, it is a nice little camera - should I consider one of these? I've also been told there is a lens which covers 50mm-2/300mm? Would it be worth looking into one of those or is that way out my budget inc a camera aswell?

If your dad has a D40, then you could stay Nikon and then be able to swap lenses.
Although a used 40d (canon) and a good landscape lens should fit your budget.
 
im sure you could pick up a D40 with the nikon 18-200 VR on your budget which would cover just about everything you need it to
 
A good used D200 is in your budget and with the built in focus motor you can use AF lenses.
 
i shoot canon at the moment (thinking of changing back to nikon, dont ask lol) but i agree with scott, i had a play with a d200 at the weekend and its a very nice bit of kit and produces some lovely results and can be picked up cheap as chips now, the af motor is a huge plus too
 
If you're going used on Canon, the 20D or 10D are better because they were released before Canon introduced noise reduction which mucks up the image. low ISO images are clearer IMO.
 
I'd stick with Nikon as well for the same reason Lawrie says. That way you can get straight to work using your dads lenses rather than buy a Canon, Pentax etc, etc and spend god knows how long with one lens while saving up for some more when you have them already there.
