After seeing a thread earlier about who do you get to take your portrait i thought i would have a go with it as i ad some free time tonight. My first attempt at a portrait picture and fairly pleased with result from messing around its by far perfect but not bad for first attempt with only using my speedlight.

Hi, James, I've done a few self portraits myself and only have one light. I'm not keen on the heavy shadow to the left. It makes your face look a little odd. Bit of bounce would help, IMO.

What's the lighter circle to the RHS?

Cheers.

Had to use a wall as background as dont have any backdrops yet. Not sure what that lighter circle is will have the test the lens and sensor to make sure there nothing on either.

tried to bounce the light but we have really high ceilings and only thing next to me was a glass door so was very limited

My face is odd anyway without the heavy shadow ;)

To add to what Andy said, the light needs to be higher. Remember what Garry said about the sun, we're programmed to expect to see things lit from above with a single light, when you lower the light the shadows fall in the wrong place.
Hope that helps.

Yeah that's my problem I didn't have anything to put the light on so was just resting on back of the sofa.
That's one of reasons why I made the shadow darker in PP as it had lit under my chin up and looked really strange.
